Nikon Expands Acclaimed NIKKOR Lens Lineup with the Addition of the New 18-300mm VR All-in-One High Power Super Zoom Lens and the 24-85mm VR Lens

MELVILLE, N.Y. – Today, Nikon Inc. announced the addition of two new lenses to the legendary NIKKOR lineup, the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR and the AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR lenses. The new 18-300mm VR lens is a versatile and compact 16.7X all-in-one super zoom DX-format lens, while the new 24-85mm VR lens is an ideal standard zoom for any FX-format photographer. These optics were designed to meet the needs of all types of photographers, from those looking to capture everything from family outings to elusive wildlife and stunning landscapes. The new 18-300mm and 24-85mm lenses deliver the performance and superior image quality that photographers of all levels have come to expect from NIKKOR lenses whether capturing still images or HD videos.
To capture stunningly sharp images with excellent clarity and color reproduction or HD video that exhibits sharp critical focus with a dramatic depth of field, the new 18-300mm VR and 24-85mm VR lenses will empower photographers with a variety of exclusive core NIKKOR technologies. Both lenses are equipped with Nikon’s Vibration Reduction (VR) II image stabilization system which provides the equivalent of a shutter speed approximately four stops faster. The built-in Vibration Reduction will help photographers create blur-free images and video while shooting handheld and in challenging lighting conditions. Two focus modes, manual-priority autofocus (M/A) and manual focus (M), are easily selected in both lenses as well. When either lens is in manual-priority autofocus (M/A) mode, users will be able to instantly switch from autofocus to manual focus operation by simply rotating the focus ring, even during AF servo operation. Additionally, both lenses feature an internal focusing system, providing fast focus without changing the length of the lens while retaining working distance through the focus range, and Nikon’s Silent Wave Motor (SWM) technology designed to deliver fast, accurate and quiet AF performance. The lenses also boast Nikon’s Super Integrated Coating (SIC) which provides superb color reproduction, color consistency and reduced flaring.

“Whether a pro on assignment, a photo enthusiast or an indie cinematographer, all Nikon users appreciate and rely on the vast selection and reliability of NIKKOR lenses for all of their imaging needs,” said Bo Kajiwara, director of marketing, Nikon Inc. “The new AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm VR and AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm VR lenses are fully optimized to capture stunning images and videos while meeting the growing needs of photographers of all levels around the world.”

The NIKKOR 18-300mm VR Lens: Nikon’s Longest Focal Range
Building on the popularity and versatility of Nikon’s telephoto zoom lens lineup which includes both the NIKKOR 18-200mm f/3.5-5.6 and 28-300mm f/3.5-5.6 VR lenses, the new 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR lens is Nikon’s longest focal range ever, with an astounding 16.7X ultrahigh-ratio zoom range. The DX-format 18-300mm VR lens is surprisingly compact, lightweight and covers a focal range from wide-angle 18mm to super-telephoto 300mm, equivalent to a focal length of 27mm to 450mm in FX/35mm format. At the 300mm focal length setting, the lens’ large f/5.6 aperture enables photographers to shoot at faster shutter speeds with shallow depth-of-field. This new super telephoto zoom lens is ideal for taking stills when travelling and for all around general photography including landscapes, portraits and distant subjects. The 18-300mm lens is also excellent for recording HD video as it can be used for wide establishing shots, medium close-up shots and extreme telephoto sequences when the users want to separate the subject from the background.

The construction of the AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR  lens consists of 19 optical elements in 14 groups with three Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements that effectively minimize chromatic aberration, even at the widest aperture settings, and three aspherical lens elements that virtually eliminate aberrations at wide aperture settings. The new lens also incorporates a nine rounded blade diaphragm to help achieve a natural looking dramatic separation between subject and background.

The AF-S DX NIKKOR 18-300mm f/3.5-5.6G ED VR  also has a dedicated zoom lock switch which secures the lens barrel at its minimum length and will prevent the lens from sliding during transportation. Additionally, the 18-300mm VR lens is ideal for capturing close-ups with great detail, as it offers a 1.48 ft. minimum focusing distance at 300mm, as well as a maximum reproduction ratio of 1:3.2X.

The NIKKOR 24-85mm VR Lens: The Standard Zoom for FX Shooters
Ideal for photographers seeking an FX-format compatible standard zoom lens, the new AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR lens delivers sharp, crisp and high-quality images and can be assigned as an everyday walkabout lens. Covering the frequently used focal-length range of 24mm to 85mm, this lens is a great companion for any FX-format shooter and is ideal for shooting stills of landscapes, architecture, head and shoulder portraits, candid shots or group shots. For HD video shooters, the 24-85mm VR lens is a natural choice when filming landscapes, large groups of people or when wide field establishing shots or medium close-ups are needed. The 24-85mm lens is a great everyday lens that is compact, lightweight and easy to carry on any photo assignment or family adventure.

In addition to the lens’ built-in Vibration Reduction (VR) technology, the AF-S NIKKOR 24-85mm f/3.5-4.5G ED VR lens features Auto Tripod detection which recognizes when the camera is mounted on a tripod, even during HD video recording, to help deliver specialized VR correction. The lens construction of the 24-85mm VR lens consists of 16 optical elements in 11 groups with one Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass element, three aspherical lens elements and a seven rounded blade diaphragm.

A Look at the Different Kinds of Surroundings Digital cameras Today

(Free-Press-Release.com) July 20, 2012 -- Landscape photography is a field of photography which allows the photographer the opportunity to travel to many parts of the world and capture the wonders and beauty of this world whilst at the same time experiencing other cultures, food, languages and lifestyles of other races and religions.

On the other hand Landscape Photography can be just outside your own front door or window by witnessing and photographing a beautiful sunset or sunrise. Beauty is everywhere and it does not necessarily mean you have to travel many thousands of miles to capture that beautiful photograph.

The advent of digital photography has also made it a lot easier for the ordinary person to become involved in Australian Landscape Photography Unlike film photography the digital image can be deleted and hundreds of photographs taken at no cost to the photographer other than the initial cost of the camera equipment. The world has suddenly become a lot easier to capture for all to see and it allows the novice photographer the opportunity to improve their photography skills at no additional cost other than their time and motivation. To become a good at landscape photography it is first of all essential that the photographer become very conversant with their equipment such as camera body, lenses, filters and tripods. It is therefore very advisable for the aspiring photographer to spend time reading all the booklets and brochures supplied by the equipment manufacturers and start experimenting with suggested settings before they actually go out into the field. To this end it is again recommended that the aspiring photographer start with daylight photography as it is a less demanding and also easier to see all the settings on the camera and lens.

The following are a few non technical hints and tips for those about to commence landscape photography:

• Always prepare for your photography session, not matter how short, by taking time before hand to reconnoiter the landscape and terrain so that you become totally familiar with your surroundings. It is very important to know where the sun is rising; where the sun is setting and how the light will appear at the time of day you are planning to photograph.
• It is also important to become aware of the extent of any human and vehicular traffic at the time you are planning to photograph otherwise this may impede you from getting unhindered shots and thus cause you frustration and anxiety and spoil what could have been a wonderful experience.
• In conjunction with the previous comment most experienced photographers prefer to photograph either during the first two hours or last two hours of sunlight. In the first two hours of sunrise the sun's rays are clean and pure and provide beautiful low light which is not intense whilst the last two hours in the afternoon provide a glorious warm golden glow; long shadows and glorious sunsets.
• It is advisable for all photographers, where practical, to use a good sturdy tripod and remote switch. Even though most lenses have anti shake it is nearly impossible with a large camera and lens to avoid all movement. Money spent on a good strong tripod with a remote switch will be repaid many times over with beautiful clean and clear shots. The tripod and remote switch also allows the photographer to check all the camera and lens settings with a lot less pressure than if the photographer were holding the equipment.
• The two other recommended pieces of equipment considered essential for any photographer are a circular polarizing filter and a lens hood. Light rays which are reflected by any surface become polarized and polarizing filters are used to select which light rays enter your camera lens. They allow you to remove unwanted reflections from non-metallic surfaces such as water, glass etc. They also enable colours to become more saturated and appear clearer, with better contrast. This effect is often used to increase the contrast and saturation in blue skies and white clouds.

The primary use for a lens hood is to prevent light from hitting the front lens element from the sides which reduces contrast and creates flare. Pictures taken with a lens hood installed can also have a richer colour and deeper saturation. A secondary use for a lens hood is to protect the lens. Lens hoods are generally strong and stick out from the lens some distance. Accidental touches and scratches to the front element are reduced simply because the glass is more difficult to reach with the hood in place.

• Digital cameras just keep getting better but despite all this progress you will need photo software that gets your pictures looking the best they can. You will also need good photo software to import and organize all those digital images, share them online, and print them. There are many software programmes available today which allow you to do all the editing and image storing that you heart desires. The best way to find out what is available is to research the internet for articles on digital photo editing; check for articles in photographic magazines and/or check with your local camera store.
• The final piece of non technical advice is to study what the professionals are doing by reading photographic magazines and reviewing web sites of these experts to see how they approach landscape photography. There are also many web sites where aspiring photographers can chat and exchange ideas and where other photographers will give you advice.

Now that you have done a lot of research; purchased all your equipment; read all the manuals; experimented with all the settings; worked out which time of day suits you to photograph; have checked out and reconnoitered the area in which you wish to photograph it is simply a matter of practice, practice and practice. Remember once you have purchased the equipment and editing software the only cost is your time.

Hasselblad announces plan for a new era of Industry ‘Best Practice’

Hasselblad is working closely with renowned imaging standards expert Scott Geffert to promote a new era of ‘best practice’ in the industry.

The news comes as the company launches its new Phocus Calibration Guide for the Hasselblad digital camera system.

Peter Stig-Nielsen, Hasselblad’s director of digital camera products said: “Our launch of the new calibration guide is an important step in our mission to educate users with current best practices and is designed to meet the emerging standards for accurate colour and tonal reproduction.

The ‘How To’ guide includes specific instruction on creating custom ICC input profiles using third party charts and profiling software. Additionally the guide offers Phocus configuration suggestions for capturing two dimensional originals as well as three dimensional objects.”

Scott Geffert, president at Imagingetc has become an acclaimed ‘voice of the industry’ for his work on developing and deploying universal imaging standards.

Added Stig-Nielsen: “We are delighted to announce this formal cooperation with Scott in a joint mission to help advance imaging standards. We will be working with our R&D team to further address the specific needs of the cultural heritage community – the area where art meets science. We manufacture real solutions for real photographic applications based on community interaction.

Our Special Applications Department is a hub where Hasselblad users’ innovation meets creative minds at Hasselblad R&D. This enables us to look at new opportunities in specialist photographic fields such as aerial photography, forensic science, 3D imaging and more.”

ImageBrief urges photographers to unveil the lost masterpieces

Vimeo Link: http://vimeo.com/43604572

The Lost from ImageBrief on Vimeo.

ImageBrief, the online marketplace that connects image buyers with a global network of professional photographers, has appealed to photographers to find those fabulous lost images that lie in their archives unused and let them be found!

"The Lost” film is a call to arms for photographers to seek out those hidden gems on their hard drives and use them in response to the growing number of briefs on the ImageBrief website. Under the innovative new business model created by ImageBrief, image buyers submit their requirements, including budget and licensing needs, via the ImageBrief website and registered photographers are then invited to submit their relevant shots. The model is being embraced by photographers thanks to its budget and licensing transparency.

“ImageBrief provides photographers with an opportunity to monetize those images sitting on their hard drives that may not have been used otherwise,” said CEO Simon Moss. “We’ve had a great response from photographers who feel they have unprecedented control over how and where their images are used.”

More than 3000 photographers from over 100 countries are already part of the ImageBrief community. Photographers are accepted on the strength of their portfolio, and once accepted they have the ability to receive and respond to briefs. Photographers wishing to find out more should visit http://www.imagebrief.com/photographers

Now your new Hasselblad could cost 22% less

The cost of owning one of the world’s most coveted high-end cameras has just been dramatically reduced, following the launch of a landmark global marketing initiative by Hasselblad.

The makers of the world’s most advanced camera system have announced plans to cut the cost of ownership on a number of models – including a massive 22.9% off the entry-point H4D-31 (with 35-90mm lens) and 20.59% off the company’s ‘ultimate photography tool’, the 60 megapixel H4D-60 camera.

Under the revised pricing structure the H4D-31 (incl. 35-90mm lens) has been reduced by 3,565 euros to 11,995 euros. The H4D-60 cost is down 6,200 euros to 23,900 euros.

Chris Russell-Fish, Hasselblad’s global sales and marketing director said: “This is a groundbreaking move and a very important day indeed for every photographer who aspires to own one of the best cameras in the world. For many, price has long been the biggest barrier to ownership. Now we have substantially reduced prices on six units and there really has never been a better time to get your hands on a Hasselblad. Photographers can now buy into our fully integrated H System capture solutions with an H4D-31 camera body for less than 9,000 euros.

He added: “This price reduction campaign is part of an innovative and dynamic marketing strategy for the company, ahead of the world’s biggest photographic trade fair; photokina, Cologne, in September. We are determined that more of the world’s serious creative photographers will now have unprecedented access to a Hasselblad at a price they can afford.”

The popular Hasselblad trade-in opportunity will also continue. Russell-Fish explained: “We have adjusted this programme to reflect our new price structure. Photographers can get more information online.”

Under the new deal the H4D-40 unit is reduced by 1,000 euros; the H4D-50 by 3,000 euros; the H4D-50MS by 3,000 euros; the H4D-200MS by 4,500 euros and the CFV-50 Digital Back by 2,000 euros.

And in a separate stand-alone offer customers who buy a new Hasselblad camera and lens before the end of July will be eligible to purchase a second lens at just 50% of the manufacturer’s recommended sales price.

The Olympic Games belongs to humanity, not corporate lawyers

As the Olympic torch leaves Athens for the UK, James West, CEO of photo stock agency Alamy argues that is should stay where it is.
Here he takes to task the draconian rules regarding sharing photographs taken at the forthcoming Olympic Games, whilst children in the birth place of the Olympics are suffering from the consequences of a recession not of their making, James West gives us a frank solution – and a position that goes far beyond photographers and their rights.

There's a general view in the professional photography industry that any pictures featuring the Olympic logos will (and does) result in the threat of litigation from seriously well resourced lawyers representing the Olympic brand, regardless of the merit of their claims.

If you visit this page you will see a summary of how tightly controlled the Olympic brand has become: http://www.london2012.com/about-us/our-brand/frequently-asked-questions.php

This page sets out, among other things, the following:

'it is unlawful to use the Olympic symbol, the London 2012 logo or the words 'London 2012' in the course of trade without LOCOG's written consent.'

The message is basically this - when the Olympic Games are in town you cannot use words like 'London 2012' (plus a myriad of others). Eh? Come again? Why not? Because the games are so expensive to host - the host nation is fitted out for a massive roaming sporting redevelopment project that takes years to prepare for and lasts for just two weeks - and so corporate sponsors and taxpayers must pay vast sums of money to make it happen, which in turn means the Olympic Games must operate like brand mafia to enforce their precious marketing and broadcast rights.

As a consequence of this we have the heavy-handed tactics (which forced a partial climb down by an official spokesperson recently) like the ban on London 2012 ticket holders from taking pictures and sharing them online. Generally, the law on photography is quite straightforward and simple in the UK - if you are in a public place you can take a picture of anything and anyone you wish. The same principle applies to the press. On private land however it's a different matter.

The Olympic Games, in fact, belongs to the country where it all started over 2,000 years ago - Greece. Reports claim that some children in Athens are having to get by on one meal per day. This from a nation in Western Europe and the birth place of the Olympic Games which, incidentally, already has all the infrastructure necessary to hold a modern Olympic Games.

Humanity should reclaim its right to the Olympic Games, kick out the state sponsored brand mafia, and give it back to Greece. Commerce will flourish unhindered by the corrupting influence of massive sprawling urban redevelopment white elephants. And maybe the Greek economy would benefit too.
