ASMP Supports Major Initiatives for Photographers

ASMP The American Society of Media Photographers
PHILADELPHIA--(BUSINESS WIRE) -- The American Society of Media Photographers (ASMP) has announced its support for major initiatives that fund the education and advocacy of student and emerging photographers, and the growth and development of established photographers. These initiatives include the following:
  • Young Photographers Alliance (YPA) as a Major Founding Sponsor to set up mentoring and internship programs for student and emerging photographers;
  • Eddie Adams Workshop, Barnstorm, in which 100 photography students participate in an intense four-day gathering of top photojournalism professionals;
  • Farnsworth Art Museum exhibitions of Arnold Newman’s work to develop an understanding and appreciation for photographic portraiture;
  • W. Eugene Smith Memorial Fund award to a photojournalist of exceptional talent, integrity and dedication.

Support of these projects was made possible through funds received by ASMP from the Authors Coalition of America (ACA), the organization which distributes money designated for use solely in industry education and advocacy collected for copying non-title-specific works abroad. YPA sponsorship funds were a special designation from The ASMP Foundation, whose mission is to support the educational purposes and activities of the Society.

According to Executive Director Eugene Mopsik, “Among ASMP’s priorities is the encouragement and assistance we can provide to new photographers as they develop professionally, as well as our support for established photographers in their growth as visual artists. The Authors Coalition money we have received allows us to take an active role in the funding of these important programs which provide critical growth opportunities for photographers. ”

Jerry Tavin, YPA’s Founder and President, said, “We thank ASMP for its outstanding support which will provide great opportunities for our young photographers to acquire skills which allow them to embark on successful and rewarding long-term careers.”

ASMP is also a sponsor of the Arnold Newman Prize for “New Directions in Photographic Portraiture,” which is underwritten by the Arnold and Augusta Newman Foundation. It was recently announced that Brooklyn-based Emily Schiffer has been selected as the 2010 winner who will receive a cash award and an August 2010 exhibition at the Farnsworth Art Museum.

Founded in 1944, ASMP is the leader in promoting photographers’ rights, providing education in better business practices, producing business publications for photographers, and helping to connect purchasers with professional photographers. Sony Teams Up With Taylor Swift To Promote Latest Cyber-Shot Digital Cameras

Taylor Swift
Start of a year-long campaign highlighting Sony innovations

SAN DIEGO, Calif., April 26, 2010 Sony Electronics has teamed up with four-time GRAMMY award-winning singer/songwriter Taylor Swift to promote its latest Cyber-shot digital cameras in an integrated marketing campaign that puts the spotlight on the company s latest innovations.

The ads with Swift zero in on the sleek and powerful Cyber-shot DSC-TX7 digital still camera and its intelligent iSweep Panorama feature that captures ultra-wide panoramic shots in one easy press and sweep motion; a technology innovation currently only available by Sony.

Primetime advertising spots featuring Swift discovering that she can capture the breadth of her audience with the new TX7 camera will start airing today on NBC, FOX and CW, accompanied by digital and print ads carried out through June. Sony will also spread the word about the new digital camera commercial through social networks.

My fans are on the cutting edge, and I m very interested in the newest and best technologies out there, said Swift. I m super excited to be working with Sony and using the TX7 camera. The iSweep panorama mode is amazing.

This campaign with Swift and the TX7 camera is the start of a year-long campaign designed to demonstrate the quality, innovation, style and design that only Sony-branded products stand for, said Stuart Redsun, Sony Electronics senior vice president, corporate marketing. Sony is the only electronics company that creates entertainment and the only entertainment company that makes electronics. The wow factor in our newest ad is clearly illustrated when Taylor puts the TX7 in action.

The campaign kicks off with Swift visiting the Sony Innovation Center where all of Sony s electronics and entertainment assets unite, and will continue with different guests stopping by to check out other Sony innovations. All aspects of this year-long advertising campaign with interactive content and Sony s latest innovations will be highlighted at www.sony.com/innovations.

This is the first campaign to incorporate the Sony group-wide make.believe (make dot believe) brand message which symbolizes creativity and innovation and unifies both entertainment and electronics. It was developed with support of Sony Electronics advertising agency 180 Los Angeles.

About the Cyber-shot DSC-TX7
In addition to the iSweep Panorama mode, the compact and stylish TX7 takes stunning low-light images, can shoot 10 images in one second, and is the world s smallest camera capable of full high-definition AVCHD video recording and playback. The camera has a 3.5-inch (diag.) high resolution touch LCD screen and is available in silver, dark blue and red for about $400 online at Sonystyle.com, at Sony Style retail stores (www.sonystyle.com/retail), at military base exchanges and at authorized dealers nationwide.

Sigma Corporation of America’s new 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM lens now available

Sigma 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM
Rectilinear lens contains new “F” Low Dispersion glass, is widest angle zoom on the market

Ronkonkoma, NY, April 23, 2010 – Sigma Corporation of America (www.sigmaphoto.com title="Sigam"), a leading researcher, developer, manufacturer and service provider of some of the world's most impressive lines of lenses, cameras and flashes, has announced that its new, 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM lens, which incorporates the company’s new “F” Low Dispersion (FLD) lens glass, is now available.

This rectilinear lens, which was first introduced at PMA 2010 in February, is the widest angle zoom lens on the market today. The 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM is designed specifically for APS-C size image sensors and has an equivalent angle of view of a 12-24mm lens when used on digital cameras of that sensor size. The lens is currently available in Canon mount at all authorized Sigma dealers for the MSRP of $1,100, and it will be available in Sigma, Nikon, Sony and Pentax mounts in the coming weeks.

“As the manufacturer of the first ultra wide angle lens, there are a number of reasons why we are incredibly excited about the arrival of this lens. The fact that it produces a wide-angle view of nearly 121.2 degrees, depending on what camera you are shooting with, is definitely at the top of that list,” said Mark Amir-Hamzeh, general manager of Sigma Corporation of America. “Another feature that we are extremely proud of is this lens’ use of our company’s new FLD glass, which boasts performance equal to fluorite glass, but without the added weight.”

FLD glass is the highest level, low dispersion glass available with extremely high light transmission. With a performance equal to fluorite glass, this optical glass has a low refractive index and low dispersion compared to current optical glass. It also benefits from high anomalous dispersion. These characteristics offer excellent correction for residual chromatic aberration (secondary spectrum), which cannot be corrected by ordinary optical glass and ensures high-definition and high-contrast images.

In addition to having four elements of the FLD glass, the 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM also offers one hybrid aspherical lens and two glass mold elements for excellent correction of distortion and astigmatism. It incorporates an inner focusing system to produce high-definition images throughout the entire zoom range, and has Super Multi-Layer Coating to reduce flare and ghosting with superior peripheral brightness to produce high-contrast images. The lens’ Hyper Sonic Motor (HSM) provides quiet and high-speed auto focus, as well as full-time manual focus capability.

The 8-16mm F4.5-5.6 DC HSM has a minimum focusing distance of 9.4 inches throughout the entire zoom range to create exaggerated perspectives and help photographers emphasize the subject. Its compact construction measures up to an overall length of 4.2 inches and a maximum diameter of 2.9 inches.

Aerial Image Providers Around the World Adopt New Intergraph(R) Digital Camera

intergraph
Midwest Aerial Photography, Kyodo Surveying Co., Ltd., Beijing Guodian Jingwei Engineering Technology Co. and Geoplana Ingenieure purchase DMC II to meet evolving customer needs

HUNTSVILLE, Ala., April 28 /PRNewswire/ -- Four aerial imagery providers around the world – Midwest Aerial Photography in the U.S., Kyodo Surveying Co., Ltd. in Japan, Beijing Guodian Jingwei Engineering Technology Co. in China and Geoplana Ingenieure in Germany – have acquired the new Intergraph® Z/I Imaging DMC II camera to meet the ever-growing needs of the mapping and aerial photography industry.

The recently-announced DMC II is the first digital aerial camera in the industry to add a single monolithic panchromatic camera head to produce extreme wide-ground coverage for capturing large-scale, high-resolution imagery. The DMC II includes a total of five camera heads, less than any other frame-based, large-format camera system in the industry. The camera is part of Intergraph's new platform strategy, through which customized sensors are added to existing camera components to provide customers with cost-effective, modular options for various aerial acquisition needs while protecting previous investments. With three models to choose from – DMC II 140, DMC II 230 and DMC II 250 – even small and medium-sized companies can cost-effectively enter the digital imagery market, and customers can easily upgrade their systems as needed.

Midwest Aerial Photography, an aerial mapping photography specialist in the Midwestern United States, has acquired the DMC II for use in the USDA's National Resources Inventory (NRI) Program. The NRI is a statistically based sample of land use and natural resource conditions and trends on U.S. nonfederal lands. According to the USDA, it is the most comprehensive database of its kind ever attempted anywhere in the world. To support the program, Midwest Aerial Photography and others will acquire tens of thousands of aerial photos each year throughout the U.S.

"As a long-time user of Intergraph's film-based aerial cameras, our purchase of the DMC II marks our first foray into digital image acquisition," said Ken Scruggs, president of Midwest Aerial Photography. "Through high levels of data accuracy, four-band imagery and fast, efficient image production, the DMC II will play a critical role in cost-effectively delivering quality images to the USDA, while also being versatile enough to leverage for additional projects we undertake for government and private organizations across the country."

In APAC, Kyodo Surveying Co., Ltd. will implement a DMC II to conduct orthophoto production for the Geographical Survey Institute and Forestry Agency of Japan, while Beijing Guodian Jingwei Engineering Technology Co. in China has purchased two DMC II cameras for large-scale mapping and orthophoto generation.

"Due to the industry reputation of Intergraph and the tremendous local support available from Intergraph China, we are confident that the purchase of these two new cameras will significantly advance our image acquisition capabilities," said Mr. Xiao Xiaoliang, the general manager of Beijing Guodian Jingwei Engineering Technology Co.

Geoplana Ingenieure, a provider of imagery, mapping and GIS services in Germany, has also selected the DMC II as its first digital aerial camera, previously relying on film technology for aerial imaging. The camera will be used to provide mapping, GIS and photo flight services to mapping agencies, municipalities and utilities in Germany and surrounding countries, as well as to provide imagery to other users such as Google and Microsoft.

"The high system quality, attractive price point and protection of investment were key factors in our selection of the Intergraph DMC II," said Jens Knittel, CEO of Geoplana Ingenieure. "With the DMC II and Intergraph's new camera platform strategy, we will be able to successfully and cost-effectively enter into the digital image acquisition market, as well as easily upgrade our technology as customer needs expand."

The DMC was the industry's first large-format frame digital aerial camera, the first to be certified by the United States Geological Survey and the first to offer an innovative Solid State Disk (SSD) storage technology to decrease camera weight and footprint. Hasselblad’s Winning Streak Continues!

Hasselblad H4D-40
26/04/2010 For the fourth time - the second in two years! -a Hasselblad camera has won the TIPA (Technical Image Press Association) award for Best Medium-Format D-System.

This year, the H4D-40 with True Focus and APL (Absolute Position Lock) was chosen by editors of more than 20 photo magazines around the world.

The editors based their decision on five factors: innovation, the use of leading-edge technology, design and ergonomics, ease of use, and price/performance ratio.

TIPA judges noted that in addition to “making auto-focus easier and more accurate for photo professionals, the H4D series has been designed to meet the demands of high-end commercial photographers, who require the ultimate in both image quality and performance.”

Responding to Hasselblad’s latest win, CEO Larry Hansen commented, “We are honored to receive this prestigious award and proud of the company’s achievements in developing the H4D-40. This camera not only meets the needs of the established Hasselblad community of professional photographers, but will introduce 35mm DSLR photographers to the benefits of medium-format photography, including advances in image quality.”

Hasselblad Director of Product Management Peter Stig added that the H4D-40’s True Focus and Absolute Position Lock “provide a clever use of new technology. By providing this unique mechanism, with which photographers gain speed, accuracy and flexibility when focusing in a recomposed image, Hasselblad has solved one of the technological challenges facing serious photographers today.”

Hasselblad debuted the H4D in September 2009 in Florida, at the Kennedy Space Center to mark the 40th anniversary of the U.S. moon landing and Hasselblad’s first trip into outer space.

Nikon Focuses On Exceptional Image Quality At Super-Telephoto Focal Lengths With New AF-S Nikkor 200-400mm f/4G ED VR II High Power Professional Zoom Lens

AF-S Nikkor 200-400mm f/4G ED VR II
MELVILLE, N.Y. (April 27, 2010) – Today, the evolution of the super telephoto lens continues as Nikon Inc. announced the new AF-S NIKKOR 200-400mm f/4G ED VR II lens which delivers optical excellence and stunning image quality for professional photographers. Ideal for bringing to life exquisite detail for sports, nature and travel photography, this new lens affords a constant maximum aperture of f/4 and rugged construction for maximum versatility. Continued refinements and new technologies such as Vibration Reduction (VR) II, Nano Crystal Coat, and optimized autofocus (AF) modes enhance functionality and improve performance for discerning FX and DX-format photographers.

“The AF-S NIKKOR 200-400mm lens builds upon a proven design for professional level optics by incorporating the latest Nikon lens technologies to give photographers the edge in the field, and the ability to capture the most intricate of details with extraordinary fidelity,” said Lisa Osorio, general manager of Marketing at Nikon Inc. “As both camera capabilities and the roles of photographers expand, NIKKOR enhancements will continue to meet demands and exceed expectations to remain the pinnacle of optical excellence for all types of photographers.”

Whether photographing the decisive play at home plate or predators of the Serengeti, the 200-400mm f/4 lens is an essential tool for photographers who require long focal lengths and maximum versatility without sacrificing image quality. The 200-400mm lens benefits from the addition of Nikon’s proprietary Nano Crystal Coat to reduce instances of ghosting and flaring. The result is unparalleled clarity and sharpness in challenging lighting environments typical to sports venues or harsh sunlight.

Additionally, this new NIKKOR lens features Nikon VR II image stabilization, which is specifically engineered for each lens for maximum performance. VR II is a valuable asset to those shooting photos or HD video, as image blur introduced by camera shake and telephoto magnification is significantly reduced. Users are able to shoot up to four stops* slower than otherwise possible, overcoming many of the challenges of handheld shooting with such extreme focal lengths. VR functionality is further augmented with Automatic Panning Detection and an Active VR Mode to help compensate for movement from an unstable position such as a moving vehicle. Additionally, VR is always engaged when shooting in the D-Movie mode on select Nikon D-SLRs, helping to stabilize HD video capture.

The new 200-400mm f/4 lens features a host of professional focusing features to further enhance functionality. Photographers can now select from three focus modes to match shooting conditions, including manual mode (M) and autofocus with manual override (M/A) mode, and new A/M mode which is used to avoid cancelling the AF setting by unintentionally moving the focus ring while shooting. The M/A and A/M focus modes enhance AF control with fast, secure switching from automatic and manual focus to adapt to personal shooting preference and techniques. Additionally, photographers can activate the AF Recall Mode at the press of a button that allows for instant return to a predetermined point of focus to confidently capture anticipated shots.

This professional lens is constructed of die-cast magnesium for maximum durability and is sealed to resist dust and moisture, with protective Meniscus glass to safeguard the lens’ front element. The optical formula features four Extra-low Dispersion (ED) glass elements for superior sharpness, color and image quality, while minimizing chromatic aberration. The lens also features Nikon’s exclusive Silent Wave Motor (SWM) technology, which enables high-speed autofocus performance with exceptional accuracy and powerful, super-quiet operation. Nikon's Super Integrated Coating further suppresses flare and offers superior color consistency throughout the frame.

The AF-S NIKKOR 200-400mm f/4G ED VR II lens is scheduled to be available at Nikon authorized dealers in late May 2010 with an estimated selling price of $6,999.95**. For more information, please visit www.nikonusa.com.

Hasselblad Shooters Find Inspiration on YouTube

19/04/2010 How often are you on YouTube? If you’ve ever done a search for Hasselblad product or workflow videos, you’ve discovered there are literally millions.

I searched for “photographers shooting with Hasselblad,” and came up with a list of some 150,000 stories. Did a search for “Hasselblad cameras” and tapped into 350,000 leads. My search for “Hasselblad photographers” generated a list of 11,500,000 stories and videos.

Hasselblad and photographers have been an enormously popular duo on YouTube for some time. The annual Masters final exhibition and tours, plus the popular website addition, Hasselblad Owners Club, have caused a sharp spike in the number of stories to inspire and inform.

The videos with the biggest draw, inevitably, involve high-end photographers discussing their digital workflow, the power of Hasselblad, the remarkable detail and resolution of their files, how Hasselblad enhances their images and their ability to tell a story through pictures. For example, early this year Hasselblad posted videos captured by Michael Grecco, Steve McCurry, and Kevin Then as they put the brand-new H4D-40 through its paces on demanding outdoor photo shoots.

A global resource, YouTube showcases the work, workflow, and lessons learned from photographers around the world. Director David Lynch, frequently honored for his work in cinema and television, presents some of the amazing things he has achieved with a Hasselblad H3DII-39. Another video gives the visitor a behind-the-scenes look at commercial photographer Daniel Allen shooting with the Hasselblad H3Dii 31 and a Profoto Ringflash for the January 2010 issue of WildTomato magazine on board an 87-foot yacht. U.K.-based Timothy Wallace is captured using a Hasselblad H3DII 39 and Elinchrom lights for a shoot with model 'Zara' for the project 'Fashion Kills.' In an application story on wedding portrait photographer Rodney Hobbs, Melbourne, Australia, he describes how his digital workflow and the Hasselblad system and features are a perfect fit.

Videos shot at the annual Masters exhibition tour convey powerfully the experience at these events. You might want to check out the interviews conducted in January when more than 500 VIP guests attended the exhibition opening in Copenhagen, at DASK Gallery. Australian-born, Copenhagen resident David Trood, 2006 Master, Germany photographer Jan Schlegel, 2009 Masters finalist, and Swiss photographer Marco Grob, 2007 Master, all shared their perspectives on the winning collection.

Among the millions of videos waiting to be tapped are a demo on loadiing the film holder of a classic Hasselblad camera, by Walter Lew of Photo Habitat, and a photo shoot by Russian photographer Maria Goncharova captured in Saint-Petersburg with a Hasselblad Zimushka-Zima.

The next time you’re on YouTube, conduct a search for Hasselblad, Hasselblad Photographers, etc. You’ll find an unlimited collection of informative, entertaining videos to inspire your next Hasselblad creations.
