Release Announcement Industrial-Vision Fixed Focal Lens for 3.1µm Pixel Pitch Imager Supporting Distinguished High Performance 1.1" 50mm F/1.8(Model M111FM50)

January 13, 2015 - Tamron Co., Ltd., Saitama, Japan (President & CEO: Morio Ono), specialized manufacturer of optics and one of the leading companies in the security/surveillance equipment industry announces the launch of a new 50mm F/1.8 fixed focal lens in 1.1" format tuned for a pixel pitch of 3.1㎛.
 
Development Concept

Cameras with Mega-pixel sensors for an array of industrial applications, including production equipment, chip mounters, various test apparatus, machining centers and the like, are migrating towards even higher pixel counts of late.

Tamron offers an extensive range of optics for a whole variety of customer needs so customers can pick and choose the best solution for their own applications. Users of certain types of equipment require particularly high-fidelity images.

In addition to the FA (Factory Automation) series of lenses for high-pixel count imagers currently available, Tamron releases the 1.1" M111FM50 to support 3.1µm pixel pitch imagers, boasting the highest level of resolution among the entire lens lineup.

Furthermore, the new 1.1" format lens model in expands the product portfolio of the company's industrial-vision optics beyond the existing lineup comprised of 1/1.8" (six models in the M118 Series) and 2/3" (seven models in the M23 Series) respectively. With the broader range of product offerings to support the higher imaging quality needs, the scope of applications making the most of high mega-pixel cameras shall be brought to the next height.

Tamron announces development of F/2.8 fast ultra-wideangle zoom lens with VC (Vibration Compensation), world's first* in its category

Since 2012, Tamron has been expanding its lineup of interchangeable lenses for 35mm full-frame D-SLR cameras. SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD (Model A007) was the first in the series, being integrated with VC, followed by the SP 70-200mm F/2.8 Di VC USD (Model A009), SP 90mm F/2.8 Di MACRO 1:1 VC USD (Model F004), and SP 150-600mm F/5-6.3 Di VC USD (Model A011). The array of those new lenses have been highly acclaimed among the photo enthusiasts and working pros around the globe. To address the needs for more towards the wider angular field, Tamron spearheaded the development of SP 15-30mm F/2.8 Di VC USD, a fast ultra-wideangle zoom lens with the image stabilization feature, setting itself apart from the rest of zooms in this category.

For the first time, a fluorine coating is applied to the front element, which repels water or any type of dirt, while making it easier to remove such smudge when contaminated.

  • Natural and smooth blur on the subject background enhances depictive capabilities of wide-angle photography when a subject is located in the close distance.   • Speed of autofocus and control accuracy are further improved. USD*3 (Ultrasonic Silent Drive) delivers tack-sharp images due to the high torque and fast response speed with least amount of lag time, yet with extremely low acoustic noise. Equipped with a full-time manual focus mechanism, fine focus adjustments are enabled without exiting from the AF mode.

Tamron adds the SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD (Model A007) for Canon high-speed standard zoom lenses for full-size image sensor cameras to the line-up of lenses with the new aberration correction function for digital image editing software Adobe ® Photoshop ® CS6, Camera Raw (a Photoshop ® plug-in), and photo management software Photoshop Lightroom ® 4

June 15, 2012, Saitama, Japan - Tamron Co., Ltd (President & CEO: Morio Ono / Headquarters: Saitama City), a leading manufacturer of optical equipment, announced today the addition of the SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD (Model A007) for Canon lenses to the lens profile offered with aberration correction functionality for the digital image editing software Adobe ® Photoshop ® CS6, Photoshop's raw image plug-in Camera Raw, and the photo management software Photoshop Lightroom ® 4, all developed and offered by Adobe Systems Incorporated.

The lens profile will be bundled with the Camera Raw 7.1 update and Photoshop Lightroom ® 4.1. With the new profile, customers who own Tamron's SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD (Model A007) for Canon interchangeable lenses will be able to utilize the above software for easy correction of lens distortion, chromatic aberrations and peripheral brightness based on design data.*1

By installing the latest version of the Adobe DNG converter, customers who use Photoshop CS5/Lightroom 3 will also be able to use the lens profile for the SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD (Model A007) for Canon lenses.

(President & CEO: Morio Ono / Headquarters: Saitama City), a leading manufacturer of optical equipment, announced the introduction of the SP 24-70mm F/2.8 Di VC USD (Model A007), the world's first*1 full-size high-speed standard zoom lens equipped with VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization and USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive)*2, with resolution at the top of its class. The Canon mount will be released in Japan on April 26, 2012, with the sales dates of Nikon and Sony*3 compatible mounts to be announced later.

VC (Vibration Compensation)

VC (Vibration Compensation) is Tamron's proprietary image stabilization system. Tamron's VC is a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three ceramic balls. The VC lens elements are held in place only by contact with the ceramic balls, achieving smooth movement with little friction. This provides a stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking performance. And as the VC lens may be moved in parallel using only the motorized control, the mechanical structure has been simplified, enabling the creation of a more compact lens.
New VC system (moving coil method)
Tamron's original VC image stabilization mechanism utilized a moving magnet system whereby a heavy magnet was positioned near the moving VC lens element. In the new VC unit the positions of the magnet and the coil are reversed, because of this the VC optical lens element is attached to the coil. The new VC mechanism employs a moving coil mechanism with a lightweight coil, and the lighter coil reduces the load on the drive system. Thus, the lighter, more compact new VC unit contributes to the lens's overall light weight and compact size.
Because the 24-70 mm F/2.8 Di VC USD is a high-speed zoom lens with maximum aperture of F/2.8, its VC system must drive a lens that is larger and heavier than other zooms. Therefore, the shape, size and layout of the drive coils are all designed to obtain sufficient thrust. The result is a full-size, high-speed zoom that provides the same high level of compensation effect.

About the ultrasonic motor

In the ultrasonic motor, a piezoelectric element arranged in a ring formation generates ultrasonic vibrations in a metallic ring stator, and the vibration energy is used to rotate a metallic ring rotor that is attached to the stator. The rotation energy is in turn transferred from the metallic ring rotor to operate the focus lens.

Notice of Classification Code Change for Nikon Mounts

Since the introduction by Tamron of the first Nikon mount lens featuring an internal AF motor, the AF28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC (Model A20), all Nikon mount lenses with the internal AF motor had used the classification code "NII." Lenses using a coupler system* without an internal AF motor were designated as "N." Because future Nikon lenses will have the internal AF motor as a standard feature, Tamron has decided to simplify the designation and consolidate all Nikon mount lenses as "N," eliminating the "NII" designation for future models. This classification code change will be effective beginning with the 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD (Model B008).
The "N" classification lenses with coupler systems are: SP AF200-500mm F/5.6-6.3 Di (Model A08); and SP AF180mm F/3.5 Di (Model B01).
*Coupler system refers to a system that uses a shaft to harness the AF motor built into the camera body to operate the lens.

VC (Vibration Compensation)

VC (Vibration Compensation) is Tamron's proprietary image stabilization system. Tamron's VC is a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three steel balls. The VC lens elements are held in place only by contact with the steel balls, achieving smooth movement with little friction. This provides a stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking performance. And as the VC lens may be moved in parallel using only the motorized control, the mechanical structure has been simplified, enabling the creation of a more compact lens.
New VC system (moving coil method)
Tamron's original VC image stabilization mechanism utilized a moving magnet system whereby a heavy magnet was positioned near the moving VC lens element. In the new VC unit the positions of the magnet and the coil are reversed, because of this the VC optical lens element is attached to the coil. The new VC mechanism employs a moving coil mechanism with a lightweight coil, and the lighter coil reduces the load on the drive system. Thus, the lighter, more compact new VC unit contributes to the lens's overall light weight and compact size.
Because the 24-70 mm F/2.8 Di VC USD is a high-speed zoom lens with maximum aperture of F/2.8, its VC system must drive a lens that is larger and heavier than other zooms. Therefore, the shape, size and layout of the drive coils are all designed to obtain sufficient thrust. The result is a full-size, high-speed zoom that provides the same high level of compensation effect.

About the ultrasonic motor

In the ultrasonic motor, a piezoelectric element arranged in a ring formation generates ultrasonic vibrations in a metallic ring stator, and the vibration energy is used to rotate a metallic ring rotor that is attached to the stator. The rotation energy is in turn transferred from the metallic ring rotor to operate the focus lens.

Since the introduction by Tamron of the first Nikon mount lens featuring an internal AF motor, the AF28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di VC (Model A20), all Nikon mount lenses with the internal AF motor had used the classification code “N II.” Lenses using a coupler system* without an internal AF motor were designated as “N”" Because future Nikon lenses will have the internal AF motor as a standard feature, Tamron has decided to simplify the designation and consolidate all Nikon mount lenses as “N,” eliminating the “N II” designation for future models. This classification code change will be effective beginning with the 18-270mm F/3.5-6.3 Di II VC PZD (Model B008).
The “N” classification lenses with coupler systems are: AF28-300mm F/3.5-6.3 XR Di (Model A061); SP AF200-500mm F/5.6-6.3 Di (Model A08); and SP AF180mm F/3.5 Di (Model B01).

Tamron Release / P-Iris Mega-Pixel Vari-Focal Lens

Tamron Co., Ltd. (headquarters: Saitama City; President: Morio Ono) announced the release of a 1/3”-format 2.8-8mm F/1.2 Mega-Pixel Vari-Focal with P-Iris (Models M13VP288IR) that is compatible with 3 Mega-Pixel Day/Night cameras and delivers full high-definition 1080p images over the entire focal length range, both in visible and near infrared light ranges.

Development Concept

As a result of the rising demand for higher image quality in security systems, requirements for higher pixel sensors are increasing. Existing lenses were unable to implement fine automatic iris control to suit various monitoring environments. Therefore bright areas in particular tended to result in an image quality loss due to the diffraction phenomenon caused by small opening aperture. Meanwhile, there is a growing need for mega-pixel cameras to deliver high quality images over the entire angle of view, and with greater depth of field. To overcome these issues, Tamron engineers have developed a P-Iris Vari-Focal Lens equipped with a bipolar drive stepper motor that allows fine iris control to suit any environment.

  • 1. High performance 3 Mega-Pixel Lenses
    Through the use of an Aspherical element and a special LD (Low Dispersion) optical glass material in its advanced optical system, the new Vari-Focal Lens realize high optical performance that is a perfect match for 3 Mega-pixel cameras, delivering high image quality equivalent to 1080p full high-definition. At the same time, the lens features fast maximum open aperture of F/1.2 that helps to increase the sensitivity of the camera.
  • 2. Stepper motor design allows the precise control of iris setting
    There is often a drastic drop in image quality with ordinary lenses due to diffraction phenomenon caused by small opening apertures. Normally, a galvanometer is used to control the iris of the lens but precise adjustments of the aperture to a desired position was not possible. By using a stepper motor to control the iris, this lens is capable of adjusting the aperture at a position that does not cause diffraction, enabling an appropriate level of exposure by utilizing the camera shutter speed.*1 The result is that high quality, high contrast images can be recorded, even in bright outdoor areas. This fine tuning control will allow the user to acquire the best image quality delivering good depth of field at most installations.

    The wide horizontal angle of view-100.1 degrees-makes it possible to cover the entire room when positioning the camera in a corner. Supported by 3 Mega-Pixel resolutions, this image can be cropped and still show a clear image to see what is happening in the room.
  • 5. Clear images without color smear by minimizing chromatic aberration
    The Mega-Pixel IR Corrected lens uses an optical design pursuing minimization of chromatic aberration to the maximum extent in order to realize clear images without color smear. In addition, by employing advanced countermeasures against light reflection on the lens surface including multi-layer coatings, Tamron engineers have successfully minimized the light reflection, realizing clear images without ghosting and flare.
  • 6. Highly accurate mechanical construction
    In designing the Mega-Pixel IR Corrected lens, Tamron enhanced the precision of each part and component, and shifted to mass-production by using advanced manufacturing technologies. Before going into mass-production, all structural causes that are likely to lead to image degradation, including image displacement and one-sided blur, were eliminated.

Product Features

1. The 18-270mm Di II VC PZD boasts the world's highest zoom range at 15x magnification for a lens with its compact size and light weight*1, with the added value of Tamron's proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization. At 450g, measuring 88mm in length (from mount face to the tip of the lens), and 74.4mm in diameter with a filter diameter of 62mm, it's a compact and easy-to-carry lens.

PZD (Piezo Drive)
Ultrasonic motors are divided into two categories depending on the principle that generates the energy to move the drive: traveling wave motors and standing wave motors. Traveling wave motors include the ring type ultrasonic motor used in the recently launched 70-300mm F/4-5.6 VC USD as well as other lenses, but this lens employs a newer technology, the PZD (Piezo Drive), which functions on the standing wave principle.

A standing wave ultrasonic motor utilizes high-frequency voltage to extend and turn the piezoelectric (piezoceramic) element, thus moving the entire element in a standing wave movement. The metal tip is the contact point of the element to the rotor, and moves in an elliptic motion from the swiveling motion of the moving element, and the friction from this motion turns the rotor. Standing wave ultrasonic motors have the distinct advantage of being smaller than their traveling wave counterparts, and therefore allow a more compact SLR lens size.

Tamron's VC mechanism employs a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three steel balls. This lens’ advanced optical design employs a sophisticated XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) lens element made from specialized high-grade glass that has lower dispersive properties than standard LD lenses (where refraction causes the dispersion of white light into spectral hues). USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive)
Tamron’s USD works with the high-frequency ultrasonic vibrations that are produced by a ring called a ‘stator’. Energy from the vibrations is used to rotate an attached metallic ring known as the ‘rotor’. Piezoelectric ceramic, an element that produces ultrasonic vibrations when voltage of a specific frequency is applied is arranged in a ring formation on the stator. This electrode configuration of piezoelectric ceramic causes two ultrasonic vibrations to occur in the stator.

By effectively combining these two ultrasonic vibrations, it is possible to convert the energy from the vibrations that produced simple motion into energy known as ‘deflective traveling waves’, which then moves around the circumference (rotation direction) of the ring.

With the USD, the friction between these deflective traveling waves created on the metallic surface of the stator and the surface of the rotor produce force, causing the rotor to rotate. The focusing ring lens, which is linked to the rotor, is thus moved, creating a fast and smooth auto-focus drive.

Auto-focus has many benefits but sometimes the photographer needs the control of manual focus. Full time manual offers just that: the crossover from auto-focus to manual focus by simply adjusting the focus ring, allowing the photographer to make adjustments on the fly. This feature helps the lens produce impressive results even in telephoto situations where the depth of field is narrow.

Better balance and consistent length with internal focusing
When focusing, the internal elements of the lens move and the lens’ external size does not change. This offers better balance and easier telephoto shots. Moreover, the barrel is not subject to stray light entering from external helicoids that can negatively affect images. And because the external elements do not move, it makes it easier to utilize polarizing filters and the flower shape hood to control the amount of light that enters the lens.

Digital photography requires extreme precision, which is why Tamron incorporates new BBAR (Broad-Band Anti Reflection) multilayer coatings that reduce reflection into the lens elements. Tamron Releases IR-corrected, Fast, High-resolution Vari-Focal Lenses Delivering 650 TV-Line Resolution

Tamron Co., Ltd. (headquarters: Saitama City; President: Morio Ono) announced today the release of two 1/3”-format 3.0-8mm F/1.0 Vari-Focal lenses that are fast and IR-Corrected while supporting 650 TV-lines resolution performance (Models 13VM308ASIRII / 13VG308ASIRII.)

The Development Background
Along with the diversification of image sensors in the field of surveillance cameras for VGA and SD applications, new image sensors such as CMOS sensors are now popular in addition to conventional CCD image sensors. At the same time, ICs for processing image data began to offer higher performance. Along with these technological advances, surveillance cameras have been improving at an accelerating pace to deliver higher quality images and higher sensitivity. Following the trend, performance requirements for lenses are now more strict than ever. Not only enhanced resolution performance, but descriptive performance without color smear is now required as well. We at Tamron thought that lenses based on a new concept are essential in order to derive the maximum performance from these latest cameras, and have thus developed two new IR-corrected high resolution Vari-Focal lenses.

Tamron Announces Entry Into Far-IR Compliant Zoom Lenses with Its Proprietary VC Image Stabilization System

IFSEC '10, Birmingham, UK - Tamron Co., Ltd., Saitama, Japan announces two prototype zoom lens models designed for true Far-Infra Red Imaging with its proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) system built in, the very first in the industry.

The two zooms include 14-40mm and 35-105mm, addressing needs for wideangle and telephoto coverage with versatility in use with the zoom ratio of 3X. Integration of the VC feature certainly enhances practical values, delivering crisp IR images without blurring effect caused by camera vibration.

"Expansion of Tamron's product portfolio to the true far-infrared zone, stretching out to 14000nm wavelength range is a quantum leap in a sense", stated Mr. Morio Ono, president & CEO of Tamron Co., Ltd., Japan, "but this is in line with our corporate management direction to bring new imaging solution to a whole variety of industries, and a departure from optics for visible ray."

The new zoom lenses are designed and produced based on years of expertise in optical design and process technologies available at Tamron, and yet, they did not shape a form without developing new approaches both in design and engineering, which are distinctively different from conventional methodologies. "Simply put, you cannot see anything through the lens because it does not transmit the bandwidth of light that human eyes can recognize. Therefore, no alignment fixtures, for instance, developed in the past works in the way they are supposed to function. A whole new devices are required for metrology alone", so revealed a story behind the scene of development process.

The Far-IR vision systems, for many years to date, were nearly used exclusively for military and/or intelligence related arena by nature. However, when the Swine Flu broke out as a potentially serious threat to human beings, thermal-detection camera emerged as a star apparatus to cope with the situation. Implementation of preventive measures are the key to avoid spread of such threat around the globe, and detecting body temperatures in a non-offensive fashion with reasonably high accuracy was proven to an highly efficient tool.

Likewise, detecting heat of an electric wire before a fire breaks out, or monitoring thermal profile of equipment of some sort in a totally dark environment with zero ambient light becomes feasible and manageable by using a Far-IR camera imaging.

"A lot of new applications absolutely isolated from arms-oriented field is where we would like to be in", concluded Mr. Ono, "where we can expect to bring in higher level of security in people's living".

Backyard Wildlife photo contest supports wildlife conservation with donation by Tamron for every photo entered*

March 25, 2010, Commack, NY— Tamron USA, Inc. announced the second in its series of four photo contests for 2010: Backyard Wildlife. This quarter's contest asks entrants to submit photographic portraits of their local wildlife, whether found in their own backyard, local parks, or other urban and rural neighborhood areas. The contest is looking for local wildlife indigenous to the photographer's home town, so photos from zoos, aquariums and the like will not be considered. The contest runs from April 1, 2010 to June 30, 2010. 1. New optical system optimized for digital cameras achieves top resolution in the 70-300mm class with specialized glass elements including an XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) lens


This lens advanced optical design employs a sophisticated XLD (Extra Low Dispersion) lens element made from specialized high-grade glass that has lower dispersive properties than standard LD lenses (where refraction causes the dispersion of white light into spectral hues). The dispersive properties of the XLD lens are at a level similar to fluorite, and in combination with LD elements make for an optimal optical design that delivers best in class resolution with advanced axial chromatic and magnification aberration correction - major inhibitors of image quality enhancement. The result is a lens that delivers sharp contrast and better descriptive performance throughout the entire zoom range.
 

2. Fast focusing USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive), the ultrasonic autofocus drive

The lens is equipped with Tamron's first-ever ultrasonic auto-focus drive USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive). It achieves faster focusing making this telephoto lens perfect for photography of sports, motor racing, and other fast-moving subjects. With advanced motor technology and newly developed software, Tamron's USD delivers precise and noiseless focusing at turbo speed.

USD (Ultrasonic Silent Drive)

Tamron's USD works with the high-frequency ultrasonic vibrations that are produced by a ring called a 'stator'. Energy from the vibrations is used to rotate an attached metallic ring known as the 'rotor'. Piezoelectric ceramic, an element that produces ultrasonic vibrations when voltage of a specific frequency is applied is arranged in a ring formation on the stator. This electrode configuration of piezoelectric ceramic causes two ultrasonic vibrations to occur in the stator.
By effectively combining these two ultrasonic vibrations, it is possible to convert the energy from the vibrations that produced simple motion into energy known as 'deflective traveling waves', which then moves around the circumference (rotation direction) of the ring.
With the USD, the friction between these deflective traveling waves created on the metallic surface of the stator and the surface of the rotor produce force, causing the rotor to rotate. The focusing ring lens, which is linked to the rotor, is thus moved, creating a fast and smooth auto-focus drive.
 

3. Equipped with Tamron's VC (Vibration Compensation) image stabilization
The SP 70-300mm F4-5.6 Di VC USD employs Tamron's esteemed image stabilization mechanism-VC (Vibration Compensation) seen in both the AF18-270mm Di II VC (Model B003) and SP AF17-50mm F/2.8 XR Di II VC (Model B005). With VC, the photographer has the freedom to shoot at a shutter speed that is an extra four stops slower without having to worry about blurring. This makes capturing handheld, evening, night, and interior shots much easier.

VC (Vibration Compensation)
Tamron's VC mechanism employs a three-coil system, whereby three driving coils activate the shake-compensating VC lens group electromagnetically via three steel balls. The VC lens elements are held in place only by contact with the steel balls, achieving smooth movement with little friction. This provides a stable viewfinder image with excellent tracking performance that eliminates the blur from camera shake for cleaner, crisper shots.
 

4. Full time manual focus at your fingertips

Auto-focus has many benefits but sometimes the photographer needs the control of manual focus. Full time manual offers just that: the crossover from auto-focus to manual focus by simply adjusting the focus ring, allowing the photographer to make adjustments on the fly. This feature helps the lens produce impressive results even in telephoto situations where the depth of field is narrow.
 

5. Better balance and consistent length with internal focusing
When focusing, the internal elements of the lens move and the lens' external size does not change. This offers better balance and easier telephoto shots. Moreover, the barrel is not subject to stray light entering from external helicoids that can negatively affect images. And because the external elements do not move, it makes it easier to utilize polarizing filters and the flower shape hood to control the amount of light that enters the lens.
