Alamy and ASPP announce new student photography competition 'My Town, My Way'

The winning image will be published in the ASPP magazine and featured on Alamy’s homepage. The student will receive a portfolio review and mentoring from industry experts. Open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students.

All entrants must be students and all entries will be submitted through Alamy. Every entry will be part of Alamy’s 100% royalty student project, where students will earn 100% of any licensing revenue generated from their images, without Alamy taking any commission.

The theme, “My Town, My Way,” was chosen to spark the imagination of students who either stayed in town for the summer or who moved to new cities to continue their education.

Alan Capel, head of content at Alamy, shared his enthusiasm about the project. “We’re anticipating a real range of imagery. We want to know how students feel about their town. We want to see their insights and emotions,” he said. “Even if we have 20 students submitting images of the same place, they should all be different.”

Michael Masterson, ASPP’s National President, added, “We are delighted to partner with Alamy on this competition because we are both committed to supporting students and emerging talent. The ASPP offers a free one year membership to graduates in photography and related fields to give them access to the networking and educational opportunities we offer. This competition is another way to reach that audience.”

Closing date for the competition is Saturday, September 14, 2013. Entries will be judged by a panel of industry experts including photographers, art directors and photography professors.

The project is open to all undergraduate and postgraduate students. Registration and entry information can be found here.

Snap a Picture, Apply Filters, Add the Polaroid Classic Border Logo and Share it to Social Media Instantly from your Android Device

San Francisco, C.A.- Polaroid announces that Polamatic, the popular photography app that combines digital photo effects and showcases them in the frame of the Polaroid Classic Border Logo, is now available for Android™ devices through Google Play. With the Polamatic app, users can shoot a new picture or use an existing one from their photo library, add one of 36 frames in the Polaroid Classic Border Logo format, apply a choice of 20 filters, write a caption on the white border, and share their unique, retro photo across multiple platforms. Polamatic combines the camera technology available in today’s mobile devices with the classic look of an instant Polaroid picture.

The Polamatic app was first released for iOS in May 2012, and is now one of the few featured photography applications available on both iOS and Android. Today’s release is compatible for Android versions 2.3.3 (Gingerbread) and above, giving users across over 2,700 devices access to the Polamatic app.

Canon U.S.A. Announces The Availability Of The Versatile EF 200-400mm F/4L IS USM Extender 1.4X Super-Telephoto Zoom Lens

Award-Winning Photographer Shares First-Hand Experiences with the EF 200-400mm F/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x lens

MELVILLE, N.Y., May 14, 2013 – Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging solutions, today announced a dynamic new super-telephoto zoom lens, the EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x. Designed for use with all Canon EOS Digital SLR cameras, the new L-series lens has an integrated 1.4x focal length extender and high-performance Image Stabilization technology, offering exceptional shooting flexibility and range, ideal for sports or wildlife photography.

The new EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x zoom lens features an optically matched built-in 1.4x extender that increases the maximum focal length to 560mm, simultaneously preserving image quality and enabling the seamless capture of distant, moving subjects. With a simple switch, photographers can easily increase zoom range, which is extremely useful when it's difficult to change lenses quickly, and helps protect delicate equipment like a DSLR camera's image sensor in environments with dust, high humidity or other extreme environmental factors.

Peter Read Miller, an award-winning sports photographer and Canon Explorer of Light, recently used the new lens while shooting various worldwide sporting competitions.

"I had the opportunity recently to use Canon's new 200-400 lens at a number of sporting events," said Miller. "I found it to be incredibly versatile, replacing several different prime lenses that I would usually carry. The zoom allows me to control my framing; the autofocus has speed equal to or faster than most fixed focal length telephoto lenses and the ability to engage the 1.4 extender without taking my eye away from the camera is a unique feature not found in any other telephoto lens available today."

To help deliver beautiful, soft, image backgrounds, the lens features a 9-blade circular aperture. The lens also utilizes inner focusing, ring USM, a high-speed CPU and optimized AF algorithms for fast and accurate autofocusing. Quiet and smooth focus shifts - essential for filmmaking - are made possible with Canon's Power Focus mode.

Using advanced optical materials such as fluorite crystal and UD glass, the new lens provides excellent correction of chromatic aberration throughout the entire zoom range, and delivers high-quality images with high levels of resolution, color fidelity and contrast. With three image stabilization modes, (standard, panning, and during exposure only) and stabilization effective up to four shutter speed steps, the new EF 200-400mm lens provides excellent results for a wide range of subjects and shooting scenarios. The new lens also includes dust- and water-resistant construction designed for extended usage under harsh conditions.

"The EF 200-400 along with the Canon EOS-1D X camera body is my new 'go-to' combination for shooting sports," concluded Miller.

The EF 200-400mm f/4L IS USM Extender 1.4x zoom lens is expected to be available at the end of May for an estimated retail price of $11,799.00.

End of the line for the Hasselblad V System

Hasselblad is to cease production of its 503CW model - the last V System camera in the company's portfolio.

The decision, which comes into immediate effect, brings to an end over a half century of evolution of the company's original camera line.

Dr. Larry Hansen, Hasselblad Chairman and CEO said: "Everything has its place in time. The veteran 503CW combined with an extensive V System range of interchangeable lenses and accessories, was for seventeen years the camera of choice for discerning professionals and aspirational amateur photographers.

But there has been a substantial decline in demand for this camera over the past five years or so and the time has now come for us to reluctantly consign the V System to history. In so doing we would like to thank all fans and customers for both their loyalty and their enthusiasm for our legacy Hasselblad V System."

He added: "Now of course the focus on medium format capture is on our H System - the world's most advanced camera system. The latest generation cameras represent medium format capture engineering at its most exemplary and are well-placed to secure and underpin the company's unrivalled reputation for providing highest image quality and craftsmanship. Additionally we are focusing on new products for advanced enthusiasts."

Hasselblad has confirmed that the last 503CW has rolled off the production line but the company will continue to provide V System accessories while stocks last. V System support will also still be available through current channels.

Photography’s greats feature in the new issue of VICTOR

Hasselblad's VICTOR Magazine made a triumphant return to a print format last year, and Issue Two is now available, featuring contributions from the likes of David Hockney, Steve McCurry and Perou.

The brave decision by Hasselblad to swim against the tide last year, and to turn VICTOR Magazine from an online publication back to a printed issue, paid huge dividends as the new-look publication earned plaudits around the world for its strikingly high quality, luxury feel. Not surprisingly VICTOR - Photography Book Two has been hotly anticipated and now it's here, boasting a list of contributors that sounds like a who's who of international greats.

The new issue of VICTOR has David Hockney revealing a word-exclusive triptych, stylishly reproduced as a complex multiple gatefold, while there's also an exclusive edit from Steve McCurry of the Pirelli 2013 Calendar, which he photographed in Rio de Janeiro. Also featured in VICTOR - Photography Book Two is Alec Soth, a photographer known for his monochrome exploration of Americana; Guido Argentini, showcasing his exceptional nude studies; and London-based photographer Perou, who has photographed every celebrity in modern culture from Bill Clinton through to Justin Bieber. Exclusively for VICTOR Perou is also showcasing a collaboration with adidas Originals, an exciting project titled Concrete that features their Spring/Summer 2013 collection.

"We were delighted to bring VICTOR back as a print title last year," says Paul Waterworth, Hasselblad's Global Photographer Relations Manager. "Because we were looking to showcase some of the exceptional photographers from around the world who are using Hasselblad cameras it made sense to use their work within a format that truly did it justice. Issue Two of VICTOR will very much continue that journey, and the book format allows us to capture the full quality of images produced by one of the world's best cameras."

"Establishing VICTOR at the forefront of print publishing and photography titles has been a key aim," says the publication's Editor-in-Chief and Creative Director Stephen Toner, "and we were delighted to see this recognised by the British Journal of Photography in its 'Cool & Noteworthy 2012' review, where they named VICTOR as Best Customer Magazine 2012.

"This is an exciting time for photography, calling for innovation, dynamism and an embrace of the future. But it also requires a respect for heritage and for the expertise that comes from a long history of working at the very highest level, to the most exacting standards. Hasselblad - and all the photographers included in this issue - embody this approach perfectly and this book is a testament to their craft."

True to the spirit of Issue One, VICTOR - Photography Book Two is a large-format, hardback, cloth-bound print title defined by outstanding photography, unique typography and the highest-quality print reproductions. Although its appearance is not that of a magazine at all but of a high quality book, it continues to be priced at a magazine level - £15/€20/US$25 - making it accessible to the widest possible audience.

VICTOR is stocked by exclusive magazine shops around the world, and will be available in the UK from April 15, the EU from April 22 and the rest of the world from May 6. The magazine can also be ordered online and will be shipped to all countries.

Nikon's Newest Advanced Performance COOLPIX Cameras Provide Incredible Quality and Control for Those Serious About Capturing Stunning Images

World Renowned Optics and a Host of Innovative Technologies, Including the Use of a DX-Format Image Sensor, Provide Users with Premier Compacts for Shooting and Sharing

MELVILLE, N.Y. – 03/14/2013, Nikon Inc. announced two new advanced performance COOLPIX cameras, built for the customer seeking the best image quality possible with the convenience and ease-of-use of a compact camera. The Nikon COOLPIX A is the first COOLPIX to incorporate a DX-format sensor, similar to those found in many of Nikon’s coveted D-SLRs, which provides the highest image quality possible from a compact point-and-shoot. Additionally, the small yet powerful COOLPIX P330 fits comfortably into a shirt pocket, yet gives users the confidence to capture beautiful imagery through amazing optics, low-light capabilities and creative control.

“The introduction of the COOLPIX A, as Nikon’s flagship COOLPIX camera, provides uncompromised image quality and incredibly sharp detail in a compact point-and-shoot camera. As the first COOLPIX to use a DX-format sensor, the COOLPIX A will exceed expectations for its unsurpassed performance,” said Bo Kajiwara, Vice President of Marketing, Planning and Customer Experience, Nikon Inc. “The COOLPIX A, along with the COOLPIX P330, demonstrates the forward-looking direction of the Advanced Performance COOLPIX line, and packs all of the benefits of Nikon’s optical heritage and imaging experience into a compact, yet powerful package.”

Advanced Performance COOLPIX Cameras with Wi-Fi® Connectivity
For those who never settle for second best, this new duo presents the optimal choice to consistently capture high-quality images and HD video with outstanding clarity and detail. Thanks to their exceptional CMOS imaging sensors and world-class NIKKOR lenses, these cameras deliver brilliant photos amidst the action, even in low-light conditions. With compact designs and advanced feature sets that allow users to easily grow and improve their image or video shooting skills, these new COOLPIX cameras provide creative control and connectivity options for the photographer in everyone. These new cameras also join the ultra-zoom COOLPIX P520 and performance powerhouse COOLPIX P7700 in Nikon’s series of COOLPIX Advanced Performance cameras.

Once a still or video has been captured, both cameras let users share images instantly with family and friends when connected using the optional WU-1a Wireless Mobile Adapter1. This accessory pairs with the free downloadable Wireless Mobile Utility application1, which enables users to transfer their images and videos to compatible smart devices and tablets for easy sharing and viewing with others.

The COOLPIX A: Nikon’s First DX-Format COOLPIX Camera
Unlike any other COOLPIX camera, the new COOLPIX A is equipped with a DX-format CMOS sensor that enables users to achieve superior image quality previously only possible with a Nikon D-SLR. The combination of this 16.2-megapixel DX-format sensor and ultra-sharp prime NIKKOR lens firmly positions the COOLPIX A as the reigning flagship camera in the COOLPIX line.

The all-glass 18.5mm (28mm equivalent) prime lens has an f/2.8 aperture, allowing users to shoot with a shallow depth of field to blur backgrounds for professional-looking photos. Even when the sun goes down, the lens offers the ability to turn a fleeting glance into a flattering moonlit portrait with just a press of the shutter. Always ready for the spontaneous moment, the camera’s quick AF performance and 4 frames-per-second (fps) burst help users to consistently capture any moment with outstanding image quality.

For those who want to push their photography skills, the versatile COOLPIX A also offers advanced settings to allow shooters to have complete creative control to master nearly any shooting situation. With multiple Scene Modes, a familiar manual focus ring, full manual exposure controls (P,S,A,M), and the ability to shoot RAW/NEF image files, even a simple snapshot can be transformed into artistic expression.

Additionally, the COOLPIX A offers a variety of accessories to enhance the shooting experience, including the DF-CP1 Optical Viewfinder, the UR-E24 Adapter Ring for attaching lens hoods and filters, and the HN-CP18 metal Lens Hood, which helps protect the surface of the lens and restricts light from passing through without negatively influencing images. Designed for the user who wants a sophisticated camera with the option of an advanced feature set, the COOLPIX P330 includes manual controls (P,S,A,M) and can now capture NRW/RAW images.

The P330 also enables users to enhance their photography with the inclusion of various Scene Modes, as well as Nikon’s Easy Auto Mode for capturing beautiful imagery during scenic vacations, celebrations or everyday moments, all with the convenience of a small, portable size.
