The pictures increasingly reflect a more sophisticated way of seeing and interpreting the world, making the judging process more difficult. We encourage photographers to enter their work and compete against the best.”

Judging consists of two rounds of evaluation based on creativity and photographic quality. The second-prize winner will receive a seven-day National Geographic Photography Workshop for one in Santa Fe, N.M.; the third-prize winner will receive a six-day cruise for two on a Maine windjammer schooner. Seven merit prize winners will receive a print of their photo, matted and framed by the National Geographic Imaging Lab, and a $200 gift certificate to B&H Photo.

National Geographic Traveler photo editors will showcase their favorite entries every week at www.nationalgeographic.com/travelerphotocontest. Visitors to the site can view all entries and share them with family and friends through Twitter and Facebook as well as download wallpapers and complete jigsaw puzzles featuring contest entries.

The Galápagos Expedition, in which the grand-prize winner will participate, is a unique experience to join National Geographic aboard the National Geographic Endeavour or National Geographic Islander and experience up close encounters with unique species such as flightless cormorants, marine iguanas and domed giant tortoises. Pixoto To Add Stock Photo Sales

After experiencing dramatic growth through their increasingly popular photography contest platform, Pixoto.com announces plans to add stock photo sales to their website.
Boulder, CO (PRWEB) September 24, 2012 - Pixoto, the innovative online photography community, recently added the ability for its photographer members to add their photos to the upcoming Pixoto Stock Photo Service. The company has experienced explosive growth since its inception in 2011 and has attracted over 100,000 members due to its proprietary image ranking and voting system called ImageDuel. Pixoto is the first photo contest site that ranks every image submitted by an unbiased quality score.
Pixoto members now have the potential of earning money from their photos by simply checking a “License for Stock” box when uploading them to Pixoto. Pixoto members will earn a fee when designers, editors and marketers purchase and download their photos for use in their editorial and commercial works.

Pixoto Stock, through the use of its ImageDuel voting system, hopes to revolutionize micro-stock licensing for images. Pixoto believes that its ability to rank every image submitted gives them, and their members, several key advantages over traditional stock photo sites:

  1. Crowd Validated: With the average top ranked image on Pixoto being voted on by over 100 unique people, buyers can be 100% confident that people love the photo
  2. Faster Search: With Pixoto the best images show up first in every search result eliminating hours of paging through mediocre images
  3. Fresher Images: An amazing stock photo submitted today will be on the top of the search results tomorrow
  4. More variety: Anybody can be a stock photographer with Pixoto because the best images will always rise to the top so they will be able to source stock photos from a much broader audience
Pixoto’s photography contest system is completely innovative, leveling the playing field between participants, who can sign-up for free. Photographers submit images in preset categories such as wildlife, travel, architecture, and specific themes, etc., which are then matched against one another in side by side votes called ImageDuels. The results of the ImageDuels, which are completed by Pixoto members, are used to generate a proprietary ImageScore. The average image on Pixoto collects votes from 100 unique people.
Pixoto gives awards for the best photos in each category every day and its weekly contests have cash prizes. So far, the company has realized astonishing participation from players with over 1 million images already submitted and over 56 million votes cast to date. Pixoto’s ImageDuel system is particularly advantageous for photographers looking for artistic feedback from their peers, as well as the capacity to earn awards, enhancing their own business’s marketing potential.

With the addition of their upcoming stock photo sales to their photography contest arm, Pixoto will add yet another dimension to their increasingly robust presence as an online photography community. Serving artists and photographers alike, the expanded sales presence will reach the public at large, allowing for cross-fertilization of the company’s entire enterprise.

About Pixoto:
Founded in 2011 in Boulder, CO, Pixoto has quickly become the web’s leading photo contest site with more than 100,000 members in more than 150 counties and over 1 million images submitted. Pixoto’s revolutionary ImageDuel voting system aggregates millions of individual voter preferences to create “leaderboards” of the best images in the world. 2012 WORLD OPEN OF PHOTOGRAPHY™

2012 WORLD OPEN OF PHOTOGRAPHY™
LAUNCHES $50,000US GLOBAL SEARCH FOR TOP PHOTOGRAPHERS

Vancouver, Canada  (February 29, 2012)  The worldwide search for the greatest photographers of our generation has officially begun. It is comprised of two major components: the online SOLO (single-image) competition and the pinnacle LIVE event in Vancouver, Canada.

The 2012 World Open of Photography™(THE OPEN) is a $50,000 global search to discover the undiscovered, rediscover the established and bring the very best real-life photographers in the world to the forefront.

“There is a new generation of photographers who are changing the game,” says event creator Doug Perry of media production firm W1. “In this age of rising individual creativity we’re seeing incredible photographers who are out there pushing the boundaries of visual art every day. THE OPEN was created to seek out and discover these artists and connect them to a global audience.”

Today, social media plays a major role in bringing talented photographers into the spotlight. THE OPEN leverages the power of multiple social platforms to seek out and elevate the profiles of its participating photographers. The public curates the online SOLO competition gallery through voting and sharing, the most-loved artists continually moving to the forefront.
Half of the 200 finalists are chosen by the public, and half are chosen by a panel of the sharpest eyes in the business to ensure the very best images are captured.

Following the global online SOLO competition, attention turns to the pinnacle LIVE event on September 28, 2012 in Vancouver, Canada. Six of the world’s best photographers will be flown to Vancouver, Canada to unleash 7-minute choreographed shows of the best work of their careers. The shows are produced on a massive digital screen with concert-level audio. One photographer will be awarded Best of Show. $50,000US is shared between the winners of the SOLO and LIVE competitions.

THE OPEN is developed by award-winning media production firm W1 of Vancouver, Canada. W1 is renowned for creating bold, original events that discover artists and athletes. W1-produced events have awarded over $1,000,000 in prize money to artists and athletes and drawn a collective live audience of more than 2,000,000 people. Its television specials are distributed to 122 countries.

W1 developed the THE OPEN as the evolution of the renowned Pro Photographer Showdown, a major annual live photography competition in the action-sport industry. W1 developed the Showdown (1998-2006) into a ten-screen digital mega-production that Transworld Media dubbed “The Sundance Festival of Photography.” The Showdown has sold out every year in its 14-year history. THE OPEN expands its reach beyond its foundation of action-sport by also including the genres of street, people and nature. It reaches out to artists in over 100 countries.

“We decided the time was right to blow the doors wide open and launch a truly global search for the greatest photographers of our time. We are as inspired to show the work of the most-published legends as we are with completely undiscovered artists whose careers haven’t yet taken flight.” says Perry.

The live event format is unique and very powerful. The artists spend months preparing their shows, taking the time to choreograph career-defining productions. The shows are typically comprised of 120-160 images designed to take the audience on epic journeys. As 2-time Pro Photographer Showdown winner Blake Jorgensen describes: “These shows are cool because normally your photography is diced up, and then goes to different places – it’s chosen by photo editors and art directors. The photographer himself has very little choice in how the photography is represented, so having a show where you get to creatively display your whole life’s work is pretty much the best thing you can ever do as a photographer.”  (source: Pique Newsmagazine)

THE OPEN is designed to create career-building opportunities for photographers. The online SOLO competition connects with 50,000 creative industry professionals including a broad range of photo editors and creative directors from around the world. The site also enables any photographer to sell gallery-quality prints of their images to be shipped anywhere in the world.

The online SOLO competition runs through August 1, 2012. The World Open of Photography LIVE event is scheduled for September 28, 2012 in Vancouver.

                                                                                -----

Established in 1993, W1 is an award-winning media production firm located in Vancouver, Canada. It is best known for creating the World Ski & Snowboard Festival in Whistler, BC. W1 has produced over 250 events and 400 concerts. Its productions are credited with driving over $100 million in economic activity (Canadian Sport-Tourism Alliance).

Carl Zeiss Launches 2011 Photography Contest: “Every Moment Tells a Story”

Entries until January 15, 2012 on Flickr photo community

OBERKOCHEN/Germany, 12.2011 - Every moment tells a story. That is the theme of the Carl Zeiss Photo Contest 2011, which was launched today. Anyone can enter the contest provided the photos are shot with a ZEISS lens. It also does not matter if the photographer uses an SLR reflex camera or a smartphone with a ZEISS lens.

The theme

„We are looking for that moment when you not only see a subject, but also a story. We are searching for that very special moment,” says Martin Dominicus, Head of Marketing of the Carl Zeiss Camera Lens Division. “Every life, every situation and every place is full of such moments. The ability to capture a moment in such a way that you recognize the story behind it — this is, and has always been, the high art of photography.”

Carl Zeiss encourages photographers from around the world to look for moments that fit the theme, and to submit their best image. The ability to consciously stage a moment of time into an image and press the shutter button at just the right time was mastered by the legendary photographer Henri Cartier-Bresson. He always knew what image he wanted to depict when the shutter was released. „Cartier-Bresson had an unmistakable way of expressing the story of a moment. We look forward to seeing how the participants of our photography competition capture the moments of everyday life in their own individual style,” says Dominicus.

As in 2010, this contest will again take place on the global online photo community Flickr. Participants should upload their best image to the theme “Every moment tells a story” on the official Carl Zeiss group on Flickr and tag it with the keyword “ZEISSContest2011“.

For more information about the contest and the terms of participation, visit: www.zeiss.com/photo/contest

The jury

Photographers and photo enthusiasts have until Sunday January 15, 2012 to submit their images on Flickr. Subsequently, the jury, consisting of Carl Zeiss employees and professional photographers, will shortlist the best images. One of the jury members will be the well-known Slovak photographer and researcher Filip Kulisev, who has received several international photography awards for his spectacular landscape photography.

The highest number of points will be given to images that have been consciously composed and in which one can recognize a story. The Flickr community will select the ten best images from the jury’s shortlist by designating them as a “favorite”. The images that receive the most “favorites” on Flickr will win.
