Shutterstock Gives the Lasting Gift of Clean Water to Arid Regions in Ethiopia

Wells funded by Shutterstock bring safe drinking water to hundreds of men, women and children

New York, December 8, 2010 – Shutterstock, the leading global provider of stock images and stock footage by subscription, has made a lasting difference in the lives of hundreds of men, women and children in Northern Ethiopia by providing the life-changing gift of clean, safe drinking water for decades to come.

New Shutterstock-funded wells throughout the arid Amhara region mean that men such as Muche Alemu no longer have to experience the pain of watching family members, including his own daughter, die from waterborne diseases, which claim the lives of 4,500 children on average worldwide each day. Before Shutterstock’s well came to Alemu’s village of Casie Chibechiba, he and his family had to walk for hours to a stagnant, murky pond to collect drinking water.

“Water was always our biggest fear because it made our village sick, and there was nothing we could do,” said Alemu. “But now, I do not worry anymore. We have no more sickness from water, no more children dying because they cannot find clean water to drink.”

Alemu’s story is the result of Shutterstock’s yearlong partnership with charity: water, a non-profit organization dedicated to bringing clean and safe drinking water to people in developing countries. To date, Shutterstock’s wells have helped approximately 1,500 people like Alemu in six villages throughout the drought-ridden Amhara region of Northern Ethiopia.

“As a global, socially responsible company, it is important for us to support sustainable projects that make a real difference in the lives of people around the world,” said Jon Oringer, founder and CEO of Shutterstock. “As we look toward the holiday season, we encourage our community of buyers and contributors to extend their generosity to those who need it most.”

As always, Shutterstock believes that pictures tell the story best. To see compelling images of Muche Alemu and the Shutterstock-funded well that brought clean, safe drinking water to his village, please visit: http://shutr.bz/water

New Shutterstock Facebook App

Last August Shutterstock introduced Shuttertweet, https://submit.shutterstock.com/admin.mhtml#shuttertweet a program for Shutterstock submitters that sends a tweet when your images are accepted and sold on Shutterstock.

It’s been such a hit that Shutterstock decided to build a similar app for Facebook. It’s simple. Visit your Shutterstock submitter account page https://submit.shutterstock.com/admin.mhtml#facebook_connect, follow the instructions, and you’ll be able to make posts on your Wall sharing your successes at Shutterstock.

You can set it to post a daily summary when your images or videos are accepted to Shutterstock, a daily summary of your Shutterstock sales stats, or both. It works with both images and footage, and you can set it to make posts automatically, or you can make them manually. And as a bonus, you’ll earn referral fees when your posts lead to subscription sales (under the terms of the Shutterstock Referral Program http://submit.shutterstock.com/reforder.mhtml.)

Also, if you haven’t already, be sure to visit the Shutterstock Facebook page http://www.facebook.com/Shutterstock and become a fan.

Shutterstock is looking forward to seeing you on Facebook!

Shutterstock Image Library Hits 10 Million Images

With over 125 million image downloads since 2003, Shutterstock is the leader in subscription royalty-free imagery

February 15, 2009, New York - Today Shutterstock® announced the addition of its 10 millionth image, a milestone that underscores the company’s rapid growth and commitment to high quality, crowdsourced visual media.

In a typical week, Shutterstock adds 80,000 new images – a rate of nearly eight images every minute – and provides designers, bloggers, advertisers, publications and marketers with a continuous stream of fresh new content. Shutterstock crowdsources the talents of more than 200,000 digital photographers and illustrators around the world who collect earnings when customers download their images. Shutterstock’s review team screens every image for quality and compliance, enforcing some of the highest standards in the imagery business. Just 40 percent of the images submitted by approved artists are accepted.

Shutterstock’s 10 millionth image is by Matthew Jacques of Bedford, Nova Scotia, Canada. Jacques submitted a dramatic image of two male Dall Sheep locking horns against a snowy background, photographed at a wildlife park in Nova Scotia. Jacques has been a Shutterstock submitter since 2006. Though he started taking pictures as a hobby, Jacques recently used his Shutterstock earnings to invest in a professional-quality DSLR camera and has branched out to shoot motor sports, weddings and portraits. “My hobby’s paying for itself,” said Jacques. “That’s what Shutterstock and online stock sales have done for me.”

As the leader in subscription-based stock photography and illustration, Shutterstock has delivered over 125 million image downloads to customers since its founding in 2003. Shutterstock remains the largest online subscription image library in the world.

Graphic designers have come to regard their subscription service with Shutterstock as an invaluable business tool. Every subscription provides instant access to an ever-growing library with the convenience of high-resolution files, watermark-free images, and a simple pricing structure that fits every budget. Customers have nearly limitless creative options in using Shutterstock images, which are provided under a royalty-free license. Shutterstock guarantees the legal integrity of every image with $10,000 in indemnification.

Shutterstock's pioneering strategy has helped it dominate the image subscription market amid an industry of imitators. “We have earned our spot as the number one subscription imagery site by being inventive and by building our own successful business model,” said Jon Oringer, founder and CEO of Shutterstock. “Others try to copy our 25-A-Day subscription, but customers are not fooled. They come to Shutterstock expecting the most innovative solutions to their image needs, and we work hard to exceed their expectations.”

Shutterstock Teams Up with Charity: Water to Build 12 Wells in Africa – One for Every Month of 2010

Innovative partnership will bring clean, safe water to villages in need

New York, December 3, 2009 - Shutterstock, the world's largest subscription-based stock photo agency, announced today that it has partnered with charity: water to build 12 wells in Africa in 2010 -- one for each month of the year. The partnership aims to address one of the fundamental problems facing developing nations today: the lack of clean, safe drinking water.

Shutterstock is donating $60,000 to charity: water to build wells in 12 arid villages in northern Ethiopia, where thousands of people live in areas without access to clean water. Although water is a basic resource that developed nations often take for granted, unsafe water and a lack of basic sanitation cause 80 percent of all sickness and disease, and contribute to the deaths of more people every year than all forms of violence, including war.

"Our partnership with charity: water is designed to make a real difference in the lives of people who lack one of life's basic necessities: clean, safe water," said Jon Oringer, founder and CEO of Shutterstock. "We welcome everyone in Shutterstock's global community to spread the generosity of the holiday season to help the men, women and children who need it most."

To get involved, please visit: www.charitywater.org/shutterstock. When the wells are complete, Shutterstock will update this page with photos, GPS coordinates and news from communities where wells have been built, and lives have been changed.

New York, November 18, 2009 - It has been an exciting year for Shutterstock, the world's largest subscription-based stock photo agency, thanks to the rapid growth of its innovative editorial photo program: Shutterstock On The Red Carpet.

In 2009, Shutterstock On The Red Carpet covered many notable events worldwide, including Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week, the U.S. Open tennis tournament, Madonna's Sticky & Sweet Tour, The Black Crowes Tour, the Major League Soccer Semifinal match between Chivas USA and the Los Angeles Galaxy, and the Tribeca Film Festival. Based on the number of exciting events in the pipeline, Shutterstock projects covering a total of 175 events this year.

The program, which is open to Shutterstock's submitter base of more than 200,000 talented photographers, has produced high quality editorial photos that set Shutterstock apart in the highly competitive online stock photo marketplace.

"Given that Shutterstock On The Red Carpet is the only program of its kind, it's a key differentiator for buyers who seek premium stock photos of newsworthy events at a great value," said Jon Oringer, founder and CEO of Shutterstock.

Shutterstock Launches Shuttertweet: A New Way for Submitters to Showcase their Stock Images and Footage on Twitter

Shuttertweet instantly sends out tweets when new images and footage have been added to submitters' portfolios

New York, August 19, 2009 – Shutterstock, the world’s largest subscription-based stock photo agency, announced today the launch of Shuttertweet, a new tool for Twitter that empowers stock image and stock footage submitters by instantly sending out messages (or “tweets”) announcing when new images and footage clips have been added to their Shutterstock portfolios.

Shuttertweet also enables submitters to monetize their use of Twitter. Submitters earn a referral commission from anyone who makes a purchase after clicking on the link to their Shutterstock gallery in one of their Shuttertweet messages.

In addition, Shuttertweet sends an update regarding submitters’ download counts on a daily basis to share the success of their portfolios with people that follow them on Twitter.

“Shuttertweet is truly a win-win for our submitters because it both automatically showcases their work and allows them to make money via our affiliate marketing program using Twitter,” said Jon Oringer, founder and CEO of Shutterstock.

To sign up, submitters login to the submit site and click the option under "Make Money" or visit: http://bit.ly/2izTPy to enable Shutterstock to send tweets on their behalf. Submitters can deactivate Shuttertweet at any time.

“Shuttertweet is a great way to advertise my work,” said Jake Hellbach (Shutterstock submitter name: JHDT Stock Images LLC), a successful Shutterstock photographer and videographer based in Sugarland, Texas. “I used to post links to my images and footage clips manually on Twitter when I had the time, but with this tool, I know my name is getting out to stock photo and stock footage buyers each day, so I can get back to shooting.”

Shutterstock Affiliate Marketing Program Earns High Marks from Top Bloggers

Bloggers cite strong revenues from referring subscribers and submitters to Shutterstock

New York, August 12, 2009 – Shutterstock®, the world's largest subscription-based online stock photo agency, is emerging as a leader in one of the key areas for making money online in today’s Web marketplace: affiliate marketing.

As bloggers look for new and effective ways to generate additional revenue online, many are joining Shutterstock’s affiliate marketing program to refer both buyers and submitters of stock images and stock video to Shutterstock.

Lee Torrens, author of Microstock Diaries, one of the leading blogs covering the online stock photo market, describes Shutterstock’s affiliate program as the best revenue producer among the stock photos sites that he recommends.

"In my experience, Shutterstock's affiliate program is the most lucrative of all microstock agencies for bloggers with an audience of photographers," Torrens said. "I know many bloggers and online publishers who are very happy with the amount of extra income that the program generates."

Matt Antonino, author of NiltoMil, another popular online stock photography blog, agrees.

“Shutterstock's affiliate program is the best in the microstock industry and one of the best anywhere,” Antonino said. “New photographers sign up directly from my blog, and Shutterstock takes care of everything else all the way through paying me. I often make more on the affiliate program than I do on sales at other sites.”

Tyler Olson of Microstock Group added, “I think the referral program at Shutterstock is great; it is really one of the best programs of any site.”

Since many bloggers are also photographers who submit photos to Shutterstock, they base their recommendations on the positive experience they have had using the service.

"Shutterstock is among the agencies I recommend to other photographers verbally and in other ways which don't include the incentive of the referral program,” Torrens said. “In addition to the top sales performance, Shutterstock is very business focused, and in my experience has always maintained a high level of professionalism."

Adam Riggs, president and CFO of Shutterstock, invites bloggers to take advantage of Shutterstock’s referral program.

“Whether you’re recommending Shutterstock to stock image buyers or to submitters, Shutterstock has a generous program to thank you for promoting us within your community,” Riggs said.

Here’s how it works: members of Shutterstock’s affiliate marketing program make a commission on every sale they refer. For example, for referring a subscriber who purchases a one-month 25-A-Day membership, referrers will receive a 20 percent commission (up to $50). Bloggers can also earn extra money by referring new Shutterstock submitters. When a customer downloads an image from a submitter they have referred, Shutterstock will pay them three cents for each image downloaded. While that may not sound like a lot, with thousands of subscribers downloading numerous images a day, those pennies can add up to dollars quickly.

In Tough Economy, New Survey Shows Design Professionals Use More Stock Photography to Cut Costs

Over 40 percent say they are using more stock photos this year compared to last year, according the survey by International Communications Research, sponsored by Shutterstock

New York, June 9, 2009 – In an economic climate where graphic designers are often asked to produce more with fewer resources, a new survey by International Communications Research (ICR) shows that over 40 percent of designers are using more stock photography to lower costs in 2009 compared to last year.

Designers today have responded to the economic downturn in a myriad of ways, according to Ami Brophy, CEO of The Art Directors Club in New York, a top organization for art directors and designers in the U.S.

“Increasingly, designers report taking on more concurrent projects while expanding their organizational and project management skills with greater awareness for the bottom line,” Brophy said.

The ICR survey showed that many designers found using stock photos an effective way to save money in the face of greater economic pressure. Further, when considering stock photo vendors, most looked for the best deal due to tighter budgets.

Shutterstock, the world’s largest subscription-based online stock image agency, ranked highly in many key areas. Approximately 60 percent rated Shutterstock highly for quality and selection of images, and three-fourths said they are likely to use Shutterstock in the future.

“It has always been our goal to provide the best images at the best value,” said Jon Oringer, founder and CEO of Shutterstock. “The advertising and design community can rely on us for their image needs to maintain the high level of design their clients expect.”

Adam Riggs, Shutterstock president and CFO, points out that Shutterstock’s image library continues to grow despite the economic downturn, adding an average of 70,000 images per week.

“Thanks to Shutterstock’s extensive library of over 7 million premium images, our subscribers always know that they’ll be able to find the perfect photo, vector or illustration for their creative projects,” Riggs said.

Key Survey Statistics at a Glance:

* Two in five art directors (40 percent) cite budget decreases compared to a year ago.
* More than one in five art directors and graphic designers (22 percent) are working on more projects for less profit compared to a year ago.
* Two-thirds (67 percent) of graphic designers/art directors are doing more in-house production as a cost-saving measure. Other cost-saving measures include using online royalty-free stock photography agencies (51 percent) and using traditional stock photography agencies (18 percent).
* 21 percent of graphic artists said they plan to use subscription-based agencies as the primary source of their future stock photo needs. Those more likely to use subscription-based agencies include heavier users of images (27 percent) and those who work at companies with 10 or more employees (31 percent).
* When asked what most influences their decision to use online subscription-based royalty-free stock photography, most respondents answered limited budget (80 percent). Other top reasons included:
o To combine elements into a new design (41 percent)
o Using images for an indefinite period of time (40 percent)
o Using images in a combination of communications mediums (37 percent)
* At least nine in ten respondents gave a top rating for quality of images (95 percent) and large selection of images (90 percent) when asked to rate the importance of various attributes in selecting a stock photo company on a seven-point scale.
* Three-fourths of those likely to use subscription-based agencies are likely to use Shutterstock in the future. One-fourth of those surveyed (26 percent) are extremely/very likely and half (51 percent) are somewhat likely to use Shutterstock.

Survey Methodology:
International Communications Research (ICR) surveyed 300 professionals (120 Art Directors and 180 Graphic Designers) by using a targeted web panel of 300 respondents. In order to qualify for the survey, respondents had to be employed either part or full-time in the United States and be at least aware of stock photography. Awareness of stock photography was 93% and the survey ran 10 minutes on average.

Because this is a sample, and not an actual population, an associated margin of error applies. At the 95% confidence level, the margin of error for the total sample of 300 is +/-5.7 percentage points.
