Linked Content Coalition will Make Online Content more Accessible and User-friendly
Nov 21. 2012 by CEPIC_2 - This media industry-led technical project, that aims to create the
basis for a universally recognisable way to communicate rights
information for online content, is forging ahead. The objective is to
create something that would achieve what the banking sector’s “IBAN”
achieves. The IBAN allows transactions to take place between banks all
over the world despite each bank having their own internal systems. The
LCC work will enable a similar level of functionality for accessing,
using and sharing all kinds of digital content whether that be text,
music or film, for example. Every sector has its own system for
expressing and managing rights. LCC is doing the groundwork to make it
possible to create that umbrella layer of communication over the whole
content sector like the IBAN.
Progress of the technical work was presented at the project’s second
plenary in Brussels last week and it is clear already that the LCC is on
track to create a unique rights reference model for the entire content
sector. Some of the draft technical papers can be viewed at: http://www.linkedcontentcoalition.org.
The project, that will be subject to peer review and testing, is due for completion in January 2013.
World’s largest independent stock photo site highlights the top 10 most photographed cities.
As London continues to welcome this year’s influx of summer holidaymakers, the city has come top in a list of the world’s most photographed. So, if you are one of the 27 million [1] people planning to visit London in 2011, then don’t forget to pack your camera – it seems you’ll be in good company.
Independent stock photo agency, Alamy (www.alamy.com), has the largest collection of stock images online. Here, the company provides its list of the world’s most photographed cities.
1. London – currently 804,468 images on the Alamy website. The world’s most photographed city has almost double the amount of images of New York. London has everything to offer, from historical monuments to beautiful parks, museums, restaurants and clubs. And, we can’t ignore the hype that now surrounds the city in the run up to the 2012 Olympic Games.
2. New York – currently 416,048 images on the Alamy website. The city that never sleeps is the most popular place to be photographed in the United States. We’d expect to see this at the top of the list, with famous monuments including: The Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building and Brooklyn Bridge (all of which featured in Alamy’s top 10 list of the world’s most photographed monuments).
3. Los Angeles – currently 302,732 images on the Alamy website. With a population of over three million – it is the most populous city in California, and the second biggest in the United States. Over 46 million overnight visitors [2] go to LA and the Orange Counties each year, visiting attractions including: Disney Land, Venice Beach and Universal Studios.
4. Paris – currently 207,558 images on the Alamy website. The Eiffel Tower recently came top of the list as the world’s most photographed monument, yet Paris only appears fourth on the list here. It seems tourists are fixated with the Eiffel Tower, but are perhaps not as ‘wowed’ by the city.
5. Berlin – currently 116,531 images on the Alamy website. The capital of Germany and the country’s most populated city. Famous monuments to snap include: The Brandenburg Gate, Reichstag, Checkpoint Charlie and The Berlin Wall. East meets West in Berlin, making it a visually diverse city.
6. Rome – currently 107,078 images on the Alamy website. Italy’s capital and most populated city. Rome’s famous historical monuments include: The Colosseum and The Vatican.
7. Miami - currently 72,831 images on the Alamy website. This is perhaps a bit of a surprise, but those who have visited with a camera will tell you there's something to shoot on every street corner, from the beach to diverse architecture, everyday life to a spot of ‘how the other half live’.
8. Barcelona – currently 69,581 images on the Alamy website. Spain’s second largest city, and well known in recent times for hosting the 1992 Olympic Games. Its distinctive Gaudi architecture also remains popular with photographers because it’s so unique.
9. Tokyo - currently 66,477 images on the Alamy website. As the world’s most populous metropolis, and Japan’s capital, it is hardly surprising this city appears in the top
10. Hong Kong - currently 62,441 images on the Alamy website. The city’s striking contemporary architecture and extraordinary skyline are sure to be the main reasons why this city makes it onto the list.
Commenting on the top ten most photographed cities, Alan Capel, head of content at Alamy, said: “I suspect the order of the first five cities is heavily influenced by a strong mix of both tourism and business. The latter five provide a strong mix of cultural, historical and visual intrigue. For example shooting Tokyo and Hong Kong at night can give stimulating and powerful results.
“London clearly has universal appeal with the largest number of photographs by far. And, I would anticipate its lead to increase further in the run up to and during 2012 with an influx of tourists and sports fans and new infrastructure and buildings to photograph.
“Cities offer a rich mix of cultures, colours and styles – and a good photograph can provide real insight into their life and soul.”

Jul 19. 2010 11:07 by CEPIC - IPTC has released a Photo Metadata Toolkit for Adobe CS3 to CS5 products together with PLUS on the 15th of July.
It includes a User Guide for the already built-in IPTC panels of CS5 and adds IPTC Extension and PLUS fields to Adobe Bridge CS3 and CS4 by an easy to use IPTC-PLUS Metadata panel which comes with a comprehensive User Guide too.
This Toolkit boosts the easy and successful use of IPTC and PLUS photo metadata with Adobe CS3 to CS5 products.
Download and use the Toolkit free of charge. Download the latest version v2 of the IPTC-PLUS Metadata panel
What is the Toolkit for?
The IPTC-PLUS Photo Metadata Toolkit for Adobe CS includes:
* For the IPTC Core and IPTC Extension file-info panels built into CS5: a comprehensive User Guide for both schemas
* A plug-in IPTC-PLUS Metadata Panel for Bridge CS3/CS4 for the IPTC Core, IPTC Extension and the PLUS metadata - with a comprehensive User Guide for all fields
* Example images
The panels built-into CS5 and the plug-in panels for Bridge CS3/CS4 include the granular metadata fields of the IPTC Photo Metadata and also a set of fields for the communication of image rights metadata, based on industry standard developed by the PLUS Coalition.
The Bridge panels add IPTC Extension and PLUS metadata capability to Adobe CS3 and CS4 as these versions have no built-in metadata panels available for these two standards, while CS5 has. Creating the plug-in panels was a joint effort of both organisations.
The User Guide documents aim at non-expert metadata writers. They cover the basic IPTC Core fields which keep the most essential information about an image and also the IPTC Extension fields which add fields to clearly identify all persons, organisations, locations and artwork object in the image, further they make model and property releases available and provide details about the creator, the copyright owner and the licensor of the image.
The guidelines for using the PLUS fields explain how to express the usage rights of an image in many variations, including constraints. The user guide documents were authored by David Riecks who has already written the first guide for the IPTC Core in 2005.
What's in the Toolkit?
This Toolkit is a package of 8 files:
* IPTC File Info panel in CS5 User Guide
This PDF document provides guidelines for all IPTC fields as available by the "IPTC" and the "IPTC Ext" File-Info panels delivered with Adobe CS5 products.
* IPTC-PLUS Metadata Panels for Bridge CS3 and higher
This file provides panels for IPTC Core, IPTC Extension and PLUS metadata. The panels may only be run from Adobe Bridge, version CS3 or higher. The intention this panel is to add IPTC Extension and PLUS capability to CS3 and CS4 as for both versions no corresponding file-info panels are available.
* IPTC-PLUS Metadata Panels - Installer
This is a script for installing the Panel script above.
* IPTC-PLUS Metadata Panels User Guide
This PDF document provides guidelines for all IPTC and PLUS fields as available by IPTC-PLUS Metadata panel, see above.
* 4 example image files
These image files have already a rich set of metadata and may be used as reference.
The Toolkit package can be downloaded and used free of charge.

ImageRights International, Inc., a company that helps professional photographers and illustrators discover the illegal use of their intellectual property on the Web, is offering a free version of its online image recognition and recovery service to further expand efforts against image piracy.
With this new offering, the company's advanced visual search and crawler technology will continuously scan websites and blogs to protect up to 10,000 images for professional photographers and illustrators. The crawler indexes millions of new images every month and uses powerful image recognition technology to compare customers' photos and illustrations against images found on the Web. It then detects where the customers' images have been used, even if the stolen photos have been altered, cropped, rotated or color adjusted. The customer receives a full report, including a picture of the original image, its use online, and the URL and ownership information for the website where it was found.
"As an advocate for photographers and illustrators, our goal is to help artistic professionals monitor how their work is being used on the Internet, and to partner with them to recoup lost profits when it's being used illegally," said Maria Kessler, senior vice president of business development at ImageRights and former president of the Picture Archive Council of America (PACA). "Image piracy is rampant online and by making these services more accessible, we're enabling creatives to have more control over how their images are used, while sending a clear message that we are patrolling for unauthorized uses."
Customers who take advantage of ImageRights' free service may also participate in the company's new, optional Recovery Program, which will launch next month to help photographers and illustrators obtain compensation for the unauthorized use of their images.
ImageRights will continue to offer its Basic, Standard and Pro packages for a monthly fee of $9.95, $19.95 and $39.95, respectively. Customers who select a paid program and opt into the Recovery Program will share 35 percent of their recovered fees with ImageRights; those who select the free service will share 50 percent of their compensation. Users are welcome to opt out of the ImageRights' Recovery Program to pursue compensation on their own or with the help of their own attorney. For information about ImageRights or to create your free account and start uploading your images now, go to www.imagerights.com.

A photographic initiative to overcome Alpine barriers and connect biodiversity.
Jun 26. 2010 11:06 by CEPIC - Taking advantage of the Biodiversity Day, on May, 22nd starts the initiative "Clicks beyond the borders" promoted by the partners of the project "ECONNECT restoring the web of life". The initiative is intended for amateur and professional photographers and aims at gathering meaningful images that express the idea of overcoming barriers in the Alpine arc.
All species need to move, migrate and wander within their habitats. Although, too often men prevent
them from moving freely: a highway or a railroad, a border or differences in legislation between countries become an obstacle that undermines the natural movement of wildlife.
The challenge for the participants is to communicate this problem: their pictures will tell stories of insurmountable barriers and of strategies devised by animals and plants, facilitated also by the aid of man, to overcome them. Participants can submit a maximum of three digital pictures, taken strictly in the Alps, by January 15th 2011, into the group created on the social network FLICKR http://www.flickr.com/groups/econnect/, where people can register and upload their pictures.
A prestigious panel of experts chaired by Denis Curti, critic and director of the photographic agency Contrasto Italy, will evaluate the best 12 photos from March 15th, 2011. Denis Curti
"Using photography as a tool to communicate a so difficult subject is a great opportunity to spread to non-insiders an issue such as ecological connectivity, rarely addressed by general media but no less urgent."
The pictures will be evaluated by the experts according to criteria of adequacy as regards the theme, creativity, originality, quality and technique. The 12 chosen pictures will be shown in an exhibition to be held during the ECONNECT final conference in Berchtesgaden (Germany) in mid 2011 and will be used to create a calendar to be distributed to all the conference participants.
The best works will be awarded with:
* A weekend-stay in the pilot region of Alpi-Marittime at "La locanda del Sorriso"(www.locandadelsorriso.com)
* A weekend-stay in the pilot region of Berchtesgaden-Salzburg at "Alm & Wellnesshotel Alpenhof
(www.alpenhof.in)
* A basket of typical Italian products coming from WWF Italy's protected areas
* WWF-White Star photographic book "Last and wild."
Other awards are in the course of being defined.
The organizers of the initiative are the partners of ECONNECT, a three-year project funded by the European Union, whose main goal is to create connections among Alpine countries and protected areas in order to allow species migrating. Among the 16 partners there are the University of Medicine and Veterinary Medicine of Wien, WWF Italy, the Italian Ministry of Environment, the University of Innsbruck, CIPRA International, the Task Force for Protected Areas and many others. With numerous innovations mauritius images opened up a wide-ranging customer base over the years. Besides free of charge picture research the customers benefit from personal service and competent advice. There are 70 employees and besides Mittenwald, there are offices in Frankfurt and Vienna.

The American Society of Picture Professionals (ASPP) and the Picture Archive Council of America (PACA) want to draw your attention to a special session at their upcoming "Reinvention Weekend" April 15th – 18th in Boston.
On Saturday morning, April 17th, there will be an Open Forum on the Future of Licensing. It is not often that our industry has the opportunity to bring together licensees and licensors – photo editors, researchers, publishers, stock agencies, photographers; et al. - for a moderated debate on the challenges currently facing our industry. Representative of PLUS (www.useplus.org) will also be on hand to give an update on what new steps they are taking to bring structure to this issue.
According to Jim Pickerell, Saturday’s Open forum session is a necessary meeting of the minds for the stock business. “This program is one of the main reasons I am attending ASPP’s Boston conference. I want my voice to be heard when it comes to discussing what the best new licensing models are for our industry.”
Thanks go to our conference sponsors: PACA, ASMP, Corbis, ADBASE, Virtual Picture Desk, agefotostock, Danita Delimont Stock Photography, Copyright Clearance Center, Hunt Photo & Video, National Geographic and Aurora.

Apr 01. 2010, 10:04 by CEPIC - In an industry increasingly reliant on high volume and low price, image libraries need to increase productivity to thrive in the market. Consultancy Electric Lane now has an offering to help every library reduce workflow costs.
For the first time, a system is available which not only checks images but also fixes many problems automatically. http://www.electriclane.co.uk/
ImageVisa and ImageText create a filtering system for incoming images. Photographers receive templates for metadata and keywords, and images are only passed if data and technical requirements are met. The system can be fine tuned to the needs of the individual library, allowing for customised technical and metadata standards. The images emerge in the correct format with clean customised data .
"This is long overdue" says Electric Lane Director Sarah Saunders. "Our scripts fix as well as check, and that?s a huge boost to productivity. Photographer direct upload becomes more reliable, and staff time is saved. That is the trend for the large agencies and we are pleased to offer the service to agencies of all sizes."
Libraries using the scripts are delighted with the results. "It has revolutionised our business" says one client. " We are so light on our feet now. It's much more efficient, and there's no human error."
