New York Institute of Photography Creates Facebook Event to Assist New York Non-profit Rehabilitation Through Photograph

The New York Institute of Photography is tapping its large community of photography students, fans, and enthusiasts to help a local non-profit group who uses photography as a rehabilitation tool. Anyone can help out by donating money or cameras to RTP (Rehabilitation Through Photography).

New York, NY (PRWEB) May 28, 2010 -- Asking social media fans to pitch in for a great and needy cause, the New York Institute of Photography has (www.nyip.com) launched a 10-day event asking its 13,000 Facebook friends to donate used cameras to Rehabilitation Through Photography (RTP), the premier non-profit providing photography classes to individuals in need from childhood to old age. RTP traces its roots to the 1940s, beginning with an effort to use photography to help wounded WWII vets restore their lives and sense of self. Today, after a number of recent challenges (including the death of its long-time leader), RTP is moving into the 21st Century, and currently runs 25 programs in different settings to provide over 200 hours of photography instruction per week in program settings that include those for homeless and recently homeless people, people with cerebral palsy, and communities for developmentally disabled individuals.

NYI Director Chuck DeLaney and Student Advisor Chris Corradino recently visited RTP's program held in conjunction with Pathways to Housing in East Harlem and posted a Youtube video to show what they found – a joyous photography class!

Check out our NYIP Video of the RTP class we visited.

"Two things struck Chris and me," explained DeLaney, "the joy of the people in that class and the desperate need for more digital cameras. We think the NYI community can help, because in the megapixel-growth era of the last several years, lots of people have replaced an older digital camera with a new model. Send the old one to RTP! Many of their programs need more cameras."

DeLaney added that people can also make small donations via PayPal at the RTP site, www.rtphoto.org. "RTP has been around a long time, but with the death two years ago of its long-time director, this is a crucial phase in the organization's history. RTP does fundraising, but corporate and foundation sponsors are always impressed with grassroots support. Even if it's a few dollars or five dollars, a contribution to RTP will help keep the new momentum growing," noted DeLaney.

The RTP Camera Drive can be found on NYI's Facebook page at http://www.facebook.com/NYIPhoto. It runs through Saturday, June 5. "This is a great opportunity to help a very worthwhile cause," said DeLaney. "NYI celebrated its 100th Anniversary, and we want to make sure RTP, closing in on its 60th Anniversary, will be able to keep performing its valuable work for a long time to come."

Cameras For Kids Holds 'Why I Love Photography' Essay And Photography Contest For Kids Ages 7 To 14

The photography and essay contest is open to anyone age 7 to 14. There is no entry fee. Winners will be announced on the Cameras For Kids website and winners will receive a copy of John Crippen's book, 'Cameras For Kids'

ATASCADERO, CA, May 25, 2010 /24-7PressRelease/ -- John Crippen of Cameras For Kids announced today the 'Why I Love Photography'essay and photography contest. The contest is open to children ages 7 through 14. There is no charge for entry in the contest. Winners will be announced on the Cameras For Kids website and 1st, 2nd and 3rd place winners will receive a copy of Crippen's book, 'Cameras For Kids'. The goal of the contest, like Mr. Crippen's book, is to increase awareness of the value of the only form of technology that draws kids and teens into the world, rather than creating in them a tendency to withdraw from social interaction.

"There are many studies," stated Mr. Crippen, "which clearly demonstrate that kids and teens are being negatively affected by interacting with modern technology. From cell phones to video games, computers to dvd's, the documented effect on kids and teens is unquestionably negative. These negative effects are caused primarily by the tendency to withdraw from social interaction, withdrawal from society in general, a lack of exercise - even vitamin deficiencies resulting from lack of sunshine. Cameras could be said to be one of the only forms of modern day technology that require that the participant interact directly with the world around him or her. Photography and cameras sharpen and enhance creative thinking, improve observational skills and allow kids and teens to reconnect with the world around them."

John Crippen's new book, Cameras For Kids, is a fun filled book full of projects for young children. The projects found in Cameras For Kids are fun, simple and inexpensive to create. The book was written to stimulate art and creativity at an early age. Basic camera functions, settings, and even basic composition are covered in this book which is recommended for ages 7 through 14 years of age.

"The book was created," continued Mr. Crippen, "with educators and parents in mind and can be easily adapted to a curriculum for art and enrichment programs. The program has been presented to a wide range of students in the Atascadero Unified School District, on the California Central Coast. The kids are very enthusiastic about the program. The book has already been adopted by districts and libraries."

As a compliment to the book, there is a CamerasForKids website with free instructions and information on photography, downloadable lesson plans for teachers, and even assistance in writing grants for schools with tight budgets. The website has many other topics for children to explore such as articles on animals, nature, and science. Designed to be an overall positive and enriching learning experience, the Cameras for Kids Website was created to reconnect children, parents, and teachers with the world around them.

The 'Why I Love Photography' contest begins on May 23, 2010. Entries must be received by August 1, 2010. Entry forms and all necessary information, including rules and parental release forms can be found at the Cameras For Kids website. Winners will be announced on August 15th, 2020. Educators may contact Mr. Crippen directly with specific requests. More information is available at the website or by email.

Mr. Crippen is available for media interview and can be reached using the information below or by email at camerasforkids@gmail.com.

John Crippen is a published author with 6 books prior to camera for kids. He is an active advocate for kids, nature, and wildlife. His photography is noted in several books and journals as well as galleries and the California Central Coast. He also holds a degree in Psychology and has also taken classes in Early Child Developement. John has also worked with the developmentally disabled and enjoys being an educator

New Service Provides Hilarious Way to Hear and See What People Are Saying in Voicemail

NEW YORK, TECHCRUNCH DISRUPT, May 24, 2010 - AudioMicro, which offers the world’s largest collection of user-generated royalty free music and sound effects, announced today it has acquired Manhattan Beach, Calif.-based Audioo (pronounced AWW-DEE-YOU) and has relaunched the site as an outrageous new voicemail sharing service that enables people to search, browse, and listen-in on other people’s voicemails. The service—now live—publishes users’ voicemails with transcriptions to the Audioo website and to users’ Facebook and Twitter accounts. The new Audioo was selected to participate in the “Startup Battlefield” at the TechCrunch Disrupt conference, being held May 24-26 in New York. To register for a free Audioo account, visit www.audioo.com.

Audioo is hosting a contest, “Jerkin’ with The Jerky Boys.” All voicemails submitted to Audioo through June 30 will be judged by Johnny Brennan, creator of The Jerky Boys duo and best known for his prank phone calls and other comedic skits. The winner of the funniest voicemail submitted during the contest period will win an Apple iPad. More information about the contest is available at http://audioo.com/#/pages/ipad.

“Audioo users are already sharing every conceivable type of voicemail, including drunk-dial calls, the ramblings of crazy ex-girlfriends and boyfriends, and much more,” said Ryan Born, chief executive officer, AudioMicro and Audioo. “The service has only been up a short while, but some of the voicemails already posted are just insane.”

The Audioo site enables visitors to browse and listen to voicemails by area code, sort voicemails by category, including “Drunk,” “Funny,” and “Sexy,” and share voicemails with others via Twitter and Facebook. Users who submit a voicemail to Audioo receive text transcriptions of uploaded messages. Audioo is ad-supported, free, and open to all major wireless carriers. Users can submit messages through a variety of methods: Google Voice subscribers can upload directly through a Mozilla Firefox add-on, or users can upload voicemails to the Audioo site, email an audio file to Audioo, forward messages from a handset, record a voicemail through a computer’s microphone, or leave a message at 1-405-4-AUDIOO.

AudioMicro will operate Audioo as a separate division, and the entire development team will remain with the company. Audioo President Yuri Baranov will assume the role of chief operating officer for both Audioo and AudioMicro. Audioo founder Ben Padnos will remain a company advisor.

Springing Into High-Gear: Canon U.S.A. Kicks-Off Its 5th Annual Photography In The Parks Photo Contest

Canon
Canon's Photography in the Parks Contest adds new social networking features to this year's program allowing entrants to learn shooting tips from the pros

LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., May 17, 2010 – From the eye of a storm to a flower floating down a stream, Canon U.S.A., a leader in digital imaging, encourages Americans to acknowledge the beauty of nature and explore photography by participating in its fifth annual Canon in the Parks Photo Contest. From May 17 to September 30, 2010, contestants will have the opportunity to submit their best "Nature" image – the theme for this year's contest. The contest invites participants to compete within two divisions; the teen division, for entrants ages 13-17 and the adult division, for entrants ages 18 and older. With the fifth annual Canon in the Parks Photo Contest, Canon U.S.A. highlights all the splendor that nature embodies and invites photography enthusiasts to capture their best photo.

"We are thrilled to announce the fifth consecutive year of the Canon in the Parks Photo Contest," stated Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A. The winning photographers from each division will be announced in December and will be awarded with some of Canon's latest photography equipment. Design Meets Functionality With The New Canon Powershot Digital ELPH Camera: The Powershot SD4000 Is Digital ELPH Camera

Canon Powershot SD4000
LAKE SUCCESS, N.Y., May 11, 2010 – Placing top-level Canon features in a modern, stylish frame, Canon U.S.A., Inc., a leader in digital imaging, today announced the newest addition to the PowerShot Digital ELPH camera series- the Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS Digital ELPH camera. This new powerhouse point-and-shoot camera is the first of the Digital ELPH series to offer a high-sensitivity system, known as Canon's HS SYSTEM, with a CMOS sensor and bright f/2.0 lens. Offering consumers the most enhanced image quality available in an ELPH series camera, these features help to capture those wonderful moments in low-light conditions. The PowerShot SD4000 IS Digital ELPH camera also has high definition (HD) movie-shooting capabilities, providing an additional option for cataloging memorable events. Primarily, the new PowerShot SD4000 IS is great for any user with an attention for up-to-date functionality and style.

Whether attending a relative's sunset wedding or meeting friends in a dimly lit restaurant, these are times where the new PowerShot SD4000 IS showcases its best attributes. The new 10-megapixel back-illuminated CMOS sensor, in conjunction with the DIGIC 4 image processor creates Canon's HS SYSTEM to enhance image quality in low-light situations and helps reduce noise at high ISO speeds. Along with Canon's HS SYSTEM, the f/2.0 lens allows more light to enter, permitting higher shutter speeds, for further reducing the effect of camera shake and increasing image sharpness and quality. In addition, the combination of Canon's HS SYSTEM and the f/2.0 lens enables users to take photos without a flash, resulting in a more natural look while providing greater depth of field, making it an exemplary tool for portrait photography. In addition, the PowerShot SD4000 IS has the fastest high-speed burst rate to date* in a Canon PowerShot Digital ELPH camera with 8.4 frames per second (fps). New to the ELPH cameras, the PowerShot SD4000 IS has aperture and shutter controls allowing for enhanced flexibility and creative control, making this camera great for shooters who are interested in getting even more out of their photography.

"With the introduction of the new PowerShot SD4000 IS, Canon is putting the power of high-quality photography in an ultra-compact size to amplify the experience and quality customers see when shooting with a Canon camera," said Yuichi Ishizuka, executive vice president and general manager, Consumer Imaging Group, Canon U.S.A. "The two functions in the HS SYSTEM allow our customers to capture the clearest pictures in any setting, resulting in more of a professional look."

For the Design-Centric
A treat for the eyes, the PowerShot SD4000 IS has beautifully crafted curves, texture and a modern look that appeals to a design-savvy user. With all of its new features, the Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS elevates the current ELPH series, offering advanced settings in a polished, sculpted, compact frame, making it an essential item to tote anywhere.

Get Creative with HD Movie
The addition of the HD Movie feature in the new PowerShot SD4000 IS is one of the most distinguished characteristics that makes this camera a must-have for anyone. This dual-purpose camera allows users to creatively compose video, helping to capture unforgettable moments from a child's first baseball game to a son or daughter walking up to the podium on Graduation Day. Users can also have more fun with HD movie footage by using the My Color function, composed of Color Swap and Color Accent options. In addition, video content is easily downloaded from the camera via USB connection and can be easily played back on your HDTV via an HDMI output connector.

Timing is Everything
As an added bonus, the new Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS has a new Super Slow Motion movie function that allows users to record video at a very high frame rate, possessing the appearance of slow motion when played back at regular speed. The Super Slow Motion movie function captures a subject at 240 frames-per-second (fps), and later plays back the footage at 30 fps, allowing each moment of footage to be appreciated in super slow motion while maintaining great image quality.

Additional Features
# A 3.0-inch wide angle (28mm equivalent) wide screen LCD allows for easy on-camera previewing and reviewing of menus and images.
# A 3.8X optical zoom with optical image stabilization helps to ensure images will be clear and how they were meant to be captured.
# Support of the high-spec SDXC memory cards with the maximum storage of two terabytes (TB) in SDA standard.
# Eye-Fi memory card connectivity, where wireless data can directly transfer to PCs.
# New scene modes, such as miniature and fish-eye effects help to increase overall creativity.
# Smart Shutter technology, which automatically takes pictures when a person smiles or winks; resulting in less re-takes.

The new Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS is available in three different color variations: red, black and silver. In addition, while supplies last, there will be an exclusive, limited edition white PowerShot SD4000 IS model available direct from Canon (www.shop.usa.canon.com). Scheduled to be available at the end of May, the Canon PowerShot SD4000 IS Digital ELPH camera retails for an estimated price of $349.99.

Hasselblad releases new Phocus 2.5 featuring extended third party file

hasselblad
12/05/2010 In addition to a range of new photographer-oriented features, Phocus 2.5 for Apple computers allows users to import RAW files from more than 150 DSLR cameras, and features support for most standard image file formats, making Phocus more flexible and powerful than ever before. Phocus 2.5 for Mac is free of charge and available for download from the Hasselblad web site on May 19th 2010.

Hasselblad today announced the release of Phocus 2.5 for Mac, breaking new ground by adding RAW support for more than 150 third party digital cameras, including cameras from Canon, Nikon, Leica, Sony, Fuji, Olympus, and more, as well as support for the most common file formats such as TIFF, JPEG, DNG, and PNG. This added file support results in a single, comprehensive – and free – solution that will enable all Hasselblad photographers to streamline their work process by working with both Hasselblad images and those captured with their 35mm DSLRs in one and the same application. Phocus 2.5 also contains a number of new and exciting features that improve workflow and image quality, in addition to further enhancing Phocus’s open environment by enabling the photographer to share keywords from Aperture and Lightroom. Photographers who use Leaf digital backs also benefit from this upgrade, with the inclusion of RAW support for Leaf digital backs.

“This new version of the software is perfectly in line with our overall ambition of providing the most seamless, photographer oriented tools possible,” says Peter Stig, Product Director at Hasselblad. “Most high-end shooters work with a range of cameras, some Medium Format, some 35mm, depending on the challenges of the job at hand.

Phocus 2.5 allows Mac users to stay in the same familiar and powerful Phocus environment, regardless of what type of camera the files come from. In addition,”he continues, “the support for Leaf backs gives photographers the ability to accurately evaluate the benefits of moving towards an integrated Hasselblad product, such as one of our new medium format DSLRs H4D-40, H4D-50 or H4D-60.”

The key to Phocus 2.5’s file support capabilities is a clever use of Apple’s OS X, as Peter Stig explains: “The new Phocus 2.5 architecture has been tailored to use the imaging engine of Apple’s OS X operating system and takes full advantage of OS X’s support for a wide range of digital cameras, allowing us to support this range of non-Hasselblad files. Support for additional cameras will come with each new version of OS X. Tethered capture is not supported.”

“In addition,” says Peter Stig, “for 35mm DSLR shooters considering the move up to Medium Format, Phocus 2.5 for Mac provides a great opportunity to get acquainted with the Hasselblad world of Medium Format photography and image processing, including workflow options with browsing, adjusting and processing 35mm RAW image files.”

Maintaining the strengths of Phocus 2.0, the new release allows current Phocus users to seamlessly transition to version 2.5, with no learning curve. For those previously unfamiliar with Phocus, switching to the “lite” mode provides a user-friendly and streamlined interface that still provides access to the most important core features such as browsing, and the new full quality printing and slideshow creation options.

“With the launch of Phocus 2.5,” Peter Stig concludes, “Hasselblad continues to deliver upon its commitment to provide the world’s best camera systems to the world’s most demanding photographers.”

Phocus 2.5 for Mac is free of charge and available for download from the Hasselblad web site on May 19th 2010.

A current list of supported cameras is available here: Apple File Support.
For more information after May 19th please visit the Hasselblad website at www.hasselblad.com.

Tamron Announces Entry Into Far-IR Compliant Zoom Lenses with Its Proprietary VC Image Stabilization System

IFSEC '10, Birmingham, UK - Tamron Co., Ltd., Saitama, Japan announces two prototype zoom lens models designed for true Far-Infra Red Imaging with its proprietary VC (Vibration Compensation) system built in, the very first in the industry.

The two zooms include 14-40mm and 35-105mm, addressing needs for wideangle and telephoto coverage with versatility in use with the zoom ratio of 3X. Integration of the VC feature certainly enhances practical values, delivering crisp IR images without blurring effect caused by camera vibration.

"Expansion of Tamron's product portfolio to the true far-infrared zone, stretching out to 14000nm wavelength range is a quantum leap in a sense", stated Mr. Morio Ono, president & CEO of Tamron Co., Ltd., Japan, "but this is in line with our corporate management direction to bring new imaging solution to a whole variety of industries, and a departure from optics for visible ray."

The new zoom lenses are designed and produced based on years of expertise in optical design and process technologies available at Tamron, and yet, they did not shape a form without developing new approaches both in design and engineering, which are distinctively different from conventional methodologies. "Simply put, you cannot see anything through the lens because it does not transmit the bandwidth of light that human eyes can recognize. Therefore, no alignment fixtures, for instance, developed in the past works in the way they are supposed to function. A whole new devices are required for metrology alone", so revealed a story behind the scene of development process.

The Far-IR vision systems, for many years to date, were nearly used exclusively for military and/or intelligence related arena by nature. However, when the Swine Flu broke out as a potentially serious threat to human beings, thermal-detection camera emerged as a star apparatus to cope with the situation. Implementation of preventive measures are the key to avoid spread of such threat around the globe, and detecting body temperatures in a non-offensive fashion with reasonably high accuracy was proven to an highly efficient tool.

Likewise, detecting heat of an electric wire before a fire breaks out, or monitoring thermal profile of equipment of some sort in a totally dark environment with zero ambient light becomes feasible and manageable by using a Far-IR camera imaging.

"A lot of new applications absolutely isolated from arms-oriented field is where we would like to be in", concluded Mr. Ono, "where we can expect to bring in higher level of security in people's living".

Jalbum New Version 8.8

Jalbum
This release has a number of minor improvements targeted to improve usability and simplify for skin developers. The most noticeable change for Windows users is that we're now using Windows standard file chooser for picking images for your album instead of the "XP looking" file chooser provided by Java. For Vista and Windows 7 Jalbum will feel more like a first class citizen on your desktop now.

Download Jalbum

News and Updates
  • Windows users now get the native Windows file chooser when adding images to Jalbum
  • Ability to sign in using either email or username (even for first time sign in)
  • More forgiving when reading corrupted images (will load using old API if new API fails)
  • Image bounds selector modified so it is more obvious that one can set any image bounds, not just the presets
  • New splash screen and sign in window (with the close button to the right this time)
  • Updated bundled skins Turtle, Chameleon, Galleria and Simplicity. Thanks all skin developers!
  • On Windows, bundled skins are now installed in the same location as installed skins (under AppData\Jalbum\skins)
  • New variable "contentPath". contentPath works like imagePath, but links to the content of movie files instead of to an icon
  • New variable "mimeType" available. mimeType reads from system/filetypes.xml. (Currently only a few file types have MIME type defined)
  • Image specific skin defined variables now have automatic data type mapping too (were previously all considered Strings)

Bug fixes
  • Media RSS file wasn't linking properly to movie files

WD® Unveils WD Photos Photo Viewer App For iPhone® and iPod Touch®

Western Digital
Users Can Easily View Their Entire Photo Collection Stored on Their My Book World Edition or WD ShareSpace Network Drives

LAKE FOREST, Calif. - April, 2010 - WD® (NYSE: WDC), the world's leader in external storage solutions, today introduced WD Photos photo viewer, an iPhone®/iPod Touch® app for use with its My Book® World Edition™1 and WD ShareSpace network drives, that lets users access up to 250,000 of their favorite photos from anywhere in the world. The WD Photos photo viewer app allows users to easily log in to their drive from anywhere so they can view their entire photo library.

Users' photos remain private, safe and secure in full high-resolution format, on their network drive, eliminating the need for painstaking uploads to costly online photo services and the need to choose which pictures to sync to their iPhone - with WD Photos photo viewer, they're all instantly and easily accessible. The app's powerful search tools, thumbnail previews and viewing options make it easy to find that special picture to show a friend at a coffee shop or remember a special moment.

With more than 50 million iPhones sold as of Apr. 2010 (Apple®), the iPhone has become one of the fastest growing smart phones in the market and is used every day by consumers to access and share their photos.

According to research firm Parks Associates (Mar. 2010), the number of network storage drives worldwide is projected to increase from 2.6 million units sold in 2009 to more than 18 million units by year-end 2014 as consumers realize the value of having one central place to store and share all their media. In 2009, 56 percent of households rated remote access of their network storage an important feature. Combining the centralized storage and remote access benefits of the My Book World Edition network drive with the iPhone is a natural fit with this rapidly growing consumer behavior.

Users can view up to 250,000 pictures on their iPhone or iPod touch by simply copying their pictures into the "Shared Pictures" folder on their My Book World Edition network drive. A unique application that runs directly on these WD network drives automatically creates optimized versions of users' photos ahead of time, enabling fast viewing on an iPhone or iPod touch without having to wait for the photos to load.

Available now at the Apple iTunes App Store, the WD Photos photo viewer app is free. Registration with MioNet®, WD's secure remote access service (included with My Book World Edition), is also free and required to use this app. WD Photos photo viewer also works with WD ShareSpace network storage systems.

"Home networks are becoming prevalent in many parts of the world, and WD's My Book World Edition network drives are the easiest way to create one place for all your photos that is accessible to everyone from within the home, and securely from outside the home," said Dale Pistilli, vice president of marketing for WD's branded products group. "With the WD Photos photo viewer app and a WD My Book World Edition network drive, users can access all of the photos from their collection via their iPhone without syncing, without extra organizing and without paying a fee. Photos are available instantly making it easy to relive those great memories or share them with friends."

WD Photos Photo Features & Compatibility
