Kursiv: KIM Keywording 1.5 released

(CEPIC) SWITZERLAND, 2nd JULY 2009 - Kursiv releases a new version of its multilingual keywording software. KIM Keywording 1.5 offers many workflow improvements and introduces a simple method to prioritize keywords. The new version is a free upgrade for existing users.

Keywording is tedious toil. Good keywording is crucial for both photoagencies and photographers. Without keywording, your images will not be found, and no sales can be expected. KIM Keywording has been designed to take the pain out of keywording and to make the process both fast and reliable.

Improved functionality
With the launch of KIM Keywording 1.5, Kursiv integrated feedback from users worldwide. "The feedback of our customers has proved to be invaluable to us", says Karsten Risseeuw from Kursiv. "While the basic workflow was well defined, we learned about many special usages, for which we could implement improvements or develop complete new options."

Prioritizing keywords
One of the major improvements is the new prioritizing function. With its help it is possible to dynamically mold and reduce the set of keywords applied to images. Why is reducing important? KIM Keywording is so efficient, that within minutes between 100 and 200 keywords can be applied to a single image. To avoid adding non-relevant keywords, the unique prioritizing option uses the main themes (categories) of an image to limit the number of keywords. This is an intuitive process, based on flexible settings and results in a better quality of the keywords used.

Other enhanced functions
The new version includes many other improvements, like:

* simplified translation interface (support for up to 10 languages)
* enhanced search options for the image database
* moving around keywords and keyword strings in the hierarchical keyword database
* improved import- and export-options

Free upgrade and test versions
For current users, the new version is a free upgrade. It is also possible to download the free test version, which offers full functionality for 30 days for a limited number of images.

Dreamstime.com Challenges Community with New Feature — Stock Rank

New Flash-Interactive Feature Announced Simultaneously with 6 Million Image Benchmark

NASHVILLE, Tenn.-- (BUSINESS WIRE) -- Dreamstime.com, a global photo community and worldwide leader in the stock photography industry, has introduced Stock Rank - a new “photo-review tool” to enable members to test their photo IQ in comparing and ranking images.

The new imaginative flash-interactive tool pairs two images on the screen and challenges the contestant to select the best photo—the photo most worthy of purchase or download—based on concept, subject, aesthetics, lighting, composition, etc. This feature was initially established as a quality assurance system utilized primarily by the agency's editors as part of their training to review the commercial aspects of stock submissions.

“We’re making the feature available to all members. It’s fun and will allow all users to learn to understand the difference between the images, degrees of quality and what actually sells,” said Serban Enache, CEO and co-founder of Dreamstime.com

As the member becomes an active participant, utilizing the feature and making accurate, consecutive selections, he or she will progress in a ranking system. As each member graduates from phase to phase, the images displayed on Stock Rank, and the comparison, will become more difficult validating the member’s ability to detect the most purchase-able image.

The DT players’ "tally" (or ranking) over the course of each phase will be posted on the community page to allow all members to monitor their success rate.

“The ranking system is designed to generate a fun competition within the Dreamstime community while enabling members to seek out that person who has an ‘eye for detail’ as a reliable go-to source for suggestions as to good/better/best photos in our blogs and forums. The participants’ skills summed together represent a grand wealth of knowledge that everyone can benefit from,” added Enache. “While Dreamstime has more than 70,000 photographers, the agency has 1.5 registered users--the majority being buyers. No matter the user (buyer, photographer, blogger or personal-user), every member has a natural eye for and interest in photography.”

For an introduction to the new Stock Rank feature visit: www.dreamstime.com/stock-photography-rank.

The announcement of the new facet coincides with Dreamstime’s celebration of yet another benchmark. As of July 1, 2009, Dreamstime has successfully exceeded the 6 million mark; the contributor who submitted the unprecedented image received a free 120 GB iPod. Simultaneously, after surpassing the 1 million-subscriber mark in late October 2008, Dreamstime now has more than 1.5 million users. A design agency located in Edinburgh, UK signed up to become the milestone member. Dreamstime.com is currently the second leading agency (in customers). The acceleration in numbers overall make it the fastest growing stock agency in the world.

The agency’s photo gallery, which has been built on community participation and communication, features an immeasurable assortment of model released lifestyle images in the business and family genres as well as an extraordinary and vast collection of travel, nature, sports, industry and health/wellness photographs in addition to distinctive illustrations [vectors, graphic art and backgrounds]. Dreamstime’s customer base is comprised of Fortune 500 companies, independent medium to small businesses and a variety of individuals who use the photos for a full range of print and online projects.

Introducing Advanced Remote Control for Digital Cameras: The Promote Control

HOUSTON, TX -- Promote Systems today introduced the Promote Control, a unique electronic accessory for digital SLR cameras that further expands photographers' creativity.

The new, microprocessor-based Promote Control unit allows photographers to control multiple aspects of the connected camera's functionality without actually touching the camera. It does that by utilizing advanced camera control protocol earlier implemented only in computer software programs. With the Promote Control, photographers no more need to bring their laptops to the field in order to perform advanced photography. Most of the photographer's daily tasks can now be carried out using a pocket-sized, battery powered remote control unit.

"The Promote Control unit is a joy to use for time exposures, HDR sequences and bracketing. The interface is far more intuitive than the convoluted menus on my cameras. In one-shot mode, access to the full range of shutter speeds from end of the cable is an especially nice touch - something my camera-maker remote can never do," said Fred Stucker, a performing arts photographer based in Mountainside, New Jersey. His website is www.stucker.com.

Among a multitude of easy-to-use features, Promote Control offers unique flexibility for exposure bracketing, which is commonly used to create High Dynamic Range images. High Dynamic Range, or HDR imaging quickly gains popularity these days, thanks to stunning detail and tone range rendition. Promote Control propels HDR imaging forward by offering unparalleled flexibility, allowing for bracketing step variability previously not possible with in-camera bracketing modes. Promote Control can also automatically put the camera into Bulb mode as appropriate when performing bracketed exposures longer than 30 seconds, requiring no further user intervention. The resulting images can be processed in a software application of choice to create a highly realistic image with a wide tonal range.

One of the most useful features of the Promote Control is an advanced Time-Lapse mode normally found only in middle to high end professional SLR cameras. Users can now perform Time-Lapse photography with any camera supported by Promote Control, including affordable entry level digital SLR cameras. An optional start delay can be specified to start a Time-Lapse sequence after a certain time period has elapsed.

In order to boost the quality of their photographs, users can easily setup their Promote Control unit to perform a fully automatic, user-defined delay for Mirror Lock-Up before every picture is taken. Locking the mirror before taking a picture gives a tripod-based camera the ultimate stability required to take a perfectly sharp photograph. The Promote Control brings this important feature to every photographer's workflow in a seamless, sensible way. *

In line with its innovative feature set, the Promote Control offers a new adaptive user interface that is both functional and easy to use. A number of user-defined setup settings are available to fine tune every aspect of the Promote Control functionality to the user's preferred workflow.

Promote Control features a large backlit liquid crystal display, and an ample-sized keypad that can be used in gloves. An optional multi-tone audible feedback is available to indicate the current operation status. The body of the remote control is built to withstand adverse weather conditions and features water/dust protection with sealing covers on all ports and openings.

The Promote Control is powered from 2 AA batteries, the most commonly available power source, and can optionally be powered from an AC adapter. And even when out of power, it retains basic pre-focus and shutter release functionality as an emergency backup. *

Promote Control is compatible with a large, constantly growing set of digital SLR cameras. Further compatibility and functionality can be expanded with freely distributed firmware updates that can be applied to the Promote Control from a personal computer.

The Promote Control currently retails for the suggested price of $299. It is immediately available for purchase at PromoteSystems.com, Amazon.com as well as at select retailer locations.
Technical Information about the Promote Control:

The Promote Control is compatible with digital cameras supporting an industry standard PTP/MTP protocol for controlling camera functions over USB interface. A non-exhaustive list of supported cameras includes Nikon D3, D3X, D2X, D2Xs, D2H, D2Hs, D200, D300, D700, D40, D40x, D50, D60, D70, D70s, D80, D90, D5000; Canon 1D Mark III, 5D Mark II, 30D, 40D, 50D, 400D, 450D, 500D, 1000D. Other camera models may be supported in future by means of updating Promote Control firmware. More information about the Promote Control, including frequently asked questions, updated compatibility lists, technical specifications, firmware updates, and optional software downloads is available online at http://www.promotesystems.com.

* Some features are subject to be supported by the camera, and may require an optional separate shutter cable. Shutter cable availability may vary by the camera brand and model.

Hasselblad Debuts CFV-39 Digital Back

New Back Turns V System Cameras into Digital Workhorses

The new Hasselblad CFV-39 digital back, custom built to match the design and functionality of Hasselblad V cameras, turns every V camera into an easy-to-use digital workhorse.

The 39-megapixel back, with a sensor twice the size of premier DSLRs, features two capture modes and a new digital lens correction technology for Carl Zeiss lenses, powered by Mac- and Windows-compatible Phocus image processing software.

“Quickly and easily, the Hasselblad CFV-39 can transform a V System film camera into a high-performance digital camera,” says product manager Peter Stig. “Just snap on a charged battery, insert a CF card, add the back, and you’re ready to shoot.”

Among the CFV-39’s features and capabilities:
~ The Hasselblad Natural Color Solution offers a generic profile that delivers true colors right out of the box.
~ All V System cameras operate cable-free. The 202 FA, 203 FE, and 205 FCC are fully supported. Other 200 and 2000 series models can be used with C-type lenses only.
~ All F and FE lenses work seamlessly with the CFV-39 using 202FA, 203FE and 205TCC/FCC (camera requires slight modification).
~ There are two selectable image formats: square (29 megapixel, 5412x5412) and rectangular (39 megapixel, 5412x7212 pixels).
~ The sensor is 100 percent larger than a full-frame 35mm DSLR sensor.
~ Image storage options include using a CF card for untethered operation or computer hard drive for tethered operation.
~ A Hasselblad raw file format, 3F RAW (3FR), ensure that images captured with Hasselblad digital products are quickly, effectively, and safely stored on the available media.
~ The 3FR files can be opened directly in Adobe Photoshop CS4, in Aperture on Mac OS-X, and converted directly into Adobe’s DNG (Digital NeGative).
~ Hasselblad image files carry a full set of metadata, including capture conditions, keywords and copyright, facilitating image asset management solutions.
~ Fits traditional view cameras: with the V camera interface plate for mechanical attachment and the flash sync connection to trigger digital capture.
~ Capture rate of 1.4 sec per capture with 39 captures per minute.
~ ISO speeds range from 50 to 800.
~ H camera owners can gain full access to V lens DAC correction by using the CF lens adapter.

“The Hasselblad CFV-39 brings an ultra-high level of integration, flexibility, and image quality to the professional photographer who needs the best for mobile and studio shooting,” says Peter Stig.

SanDisk Unveils World's Fatest 32GB SDHC Card

30MB/s Read & Write Speeds and 32GB Storage Capacity Help Photography and Video Enthusiasts Do More With Their DSLRs

PMA, Sydney, June 25, 2009 – SanDisk Corporation (NASDAQ:SNDK), the global leader in flash memory cards, today introduced the fastest 32-gigabyte (GB)1 SDHC™ card on the market. The 32GB SanDisk Extreme® SDHC™ card at up to 30 megabytes per second (MB/s)2 read and write speeds combines industry-leading performance with massive storage capacity, helping digital photography enthusiasts utilize the advanced features of today’s DSLR cameras.

“The market for entry to mid-level DSLR cameras is growing, and SDHC is becoming the de-facto card format for these devices,” said Susan Park, director, retail product marketing, SanDisk.“Our card’s 32GB of storage and up to 30MB/s read & write speeds enable DSLR users to shoot without worrying about storage or speed limitations. SanDisk Extreme SDHC cards provide consumers with a more enjoyable user experience, letting them focus on what is really important – the images that they are capturing.”

Lightning-Fast Write Speed Captures Images Quickly
A memory card’s write speed plays a crucial role in the overall system of the camera when taking pictures in rapid succession. If a card cannot process data quickly enough then the burst mode shooting may pause unexpectedly as the card catches up to the camera. Burst mode bottlenecks can lead to missing “the” shot, especially at sporting or other fast-motion events. The SanDisk Extreme SDHC card offers maximum data-transfer rates, giving consumers a memory card fast enough to unlock the full capabilities of their DSLRs.

The 32GB SanDisk Extreme SDHC card adheres to the SD Association’s new Class 10 specification, which exceeds requirement for today’s high definition (AVCHD) video recording. The card offers a sustained write speed fast enough to ensure high-definition video recording and capacity capable of storing 160 minutes of full HD 1920x1080 pixels at 24Mb/s data transfer rate.

Big Files Require Big Storage
Recently-released DSLR camera models like the Nikon D90 and D5000 offer consumers the ability to record HD videos, producing large files that can fill lesser-capacity cards quickly. Today’s high-megapixel DSLRs also can generate massive still images like those produced in the RAW format used by professional photographers who want to take advantage of the enhanced picture quality and flexibility that RAW allows during post production.

RAW images demand up to ten times as much storage space as regular JPEG images, and when taken in rapid succession during burst mode can quickly fill smaller storage cards. The 32GB SanDisk Extreme SDHC card can store up to 2500 RAW3 images, providing photographers with piece of mind and confidence that they will not run out of space for their images.

Renowned for their world-class durability, SanDisk Extreme SDHC cards guarantee operation at extended temperatures ranging from minus 13 F (minus 25 C) to 185 F (85 C). SanDisk Extreme SDHC cards are fully compatible with any camera, card reader or other device that supports SDHC cards.

When placed in SanDisk’s new ImageMate® Multi-Card USB 2.0 reader/writer, the SanDisk Extreme SDHC card transfers images and video to a computer at rates of up to 30MB/s. The card’s fast data transfer rates enable photographers operating under tight deadlines to maximize critical workflow and enter post production as quickly as possible.

Class 10 Performance Sets a New Standard
An SD™ card’s speed Class is based on its minimum data-transfer rate, and is used to ensure high-quality video recording standards. The SD Association added Class 10 as part of the SD 3.0 specification released earlier this year. The SanDisk Extreme SDHC card’s performance exceeds the requirements of even the highest-quality AVCHD video recording device, and is currently the fastest Class 10 card in the world.

Availability:
The SanDisk Extreme SDHC 32GB cards will be shipping worldwide to major retailers in August. Also in August, the current 4, 8 and16GB capacity SanDisk Extreme SDHC cards will be upgraded from Class 6 to Class 104.

###

1 1 gigabyte (GB) = 1 billion bytes. Some capacity not available for data storage.
2 Based on SanDisk internal testing; performance may vary depending upon host device.1 megabyte (MB) = 1 million bytes.
3 Approximations: results will vary based on file size, resolution, compression, bit rate, content, host device, pre-loaded files and other factors. Based on 10MB per RAW file size assumption. See www.sandisk.com
4 SanDisk Extreme SDHC cards will replace SanDisk Extreme III 30MB/s Edition cards.
