HTS 1.5 Draws Kudos on Both Sides of the Pond

15/06/2009 Since the Hasselblad HTS 1.5 tilt-and-shift lens adapter began shipping to distributors earlier this year, the innovative accessory has met with glowing praise from photographers and the trade press worldwide.

Recent reviews in the New York-based Photo District News and in the British Journal of Photography, both lengthy, detailed reads, are among the latest to throw laurels on the adapter.

"Bending the Rules," the May 20 test drive compiled by BJP, concludes: "With the addition of the HTS 1.5 adapter, the H3DII is now arguably the most competent medium-format system available, being pretty well able to cover everything in or out of the studio. . . .On present evidence, those who invest in this system will enjoy a degree of freedom not available anywhere else in a single medium-format system. And with Hasselblad's recent dramatic price reductions, the top of the line looks surprisingly affordable."

The June 2 PDN review, "HTS 1.5: Hasselblad's inventive tilt shift lens adapter proves that what's old can be made new again," wraps up the review as follows: "You've got to hand it to Hasselblad for coming up with the HTS 1.5 tilt shift lens adapter, one of the most unexpectedly great accessories to hit the medium-format market in some time. While most of the headlines for medium-format cameras concern the whopping size of the imaging sensors and the pre-Recession pricing of the digital backs, Hasselblad's created a very simple, but beneficial, tool to give you more perspective control on your images."

Note: For the H3DII-50 and all previous H-camera models, the following software upgrades must be installed before using the HTS 1.5 adapter:
# Phocus 1.1.3 for Mac and Phocus 1.0.2 for Windows
# H-camera firmware: 081222.hbf
# Capture unit firmware: R326.CIM (H3DII-50) or R248 (all other models)

The HTS 1.5 is kicking - take a look at this video published on Youtube.

Casio Releases Exilim HI-Zoom Compact Digital Camera With Ultra-Wide Angel 24 mm, 10x Optical Zoom Lens

World’s Thinnest and Lightest*1 Camera in its Class Features Battery Life of 1,000 Shots,*2 and an Advanced Dynamic Photo Function

DOVER, NJ, June 11, 2009 — Casio America, Inc. and its parent company, Casio Computer Co., Ltd., today announced the release of another groundbreaking digital camera, the EXILIM Hi-Zoom EX-H10. With a thin, compact body and an ultra-wide angle 24mm, 10x optical zoom lens, this new model can take up to 1,000 shots*1 on a single battery charge — making it the perfect travel companion.

At the heart of the new EX-H10 is the EXILIM Engine 4.0, which delivers higher image quality and lower power consumption in an even more compact package. The new Engine’s Multi-CPU*3 is specifically designed for high-speed image processing. Reflecting Casio’s quest for perfection, the new camera provides the best in basic photography functions — beautiful imaging with reduced noise and long battery life for many hours of use. A high-performance 12.1-megapixel model, it also boasts a lens with outstanding optical capabilities — from wide angle to telephoto — and it features a number of Casio’s totally original photographic functions.

Ultra-wide angle 24 mm, 10X optical zoom lens
Only Casio could find a way to pack a 10X optical zoom lens, large 3.0-inch monitor and a CCD-shift image stabilization mechanism into such a slim, compact camera body, just .95” thin, convenient for travel. With ultra-wide angle starting at 24 mm (35 mm film camera equivalent) all the way up to 10x telephoto zoom, the photographer is ready for any scene — from huge buildings and other wonders at tourist destinations to distant figures in a landscape.

*1. As of June 11, 2009, based on a Casio survey of digital cameras with a 10X or greater optical zoom lenses.
*2. When photos taken in accordance with Camera & Imaging Products Association (CIPA) standards.
*3. A package comprising a high-speed dedicated image processing CPU in addition to the usual high performance CPU.

“The development of the ultra-wide angle 24mm continues Casio’s dedication to creating digital cameras that are packed with innovative features and new technology,” said Toshiyuki Iguchi, Senior General Manager of Casio’s Digital Imaging Division at Casio America, Inc. “This new feature gives our camera enthusiasts the opportunity to capture their extraordinary moments in a variety of shooting environments.”

Advanced Dynamic Photo function
Casio’s original Dynamic Photo function, which creates composite moving images using the camera’s own high-speed image processing technology, now does even more. When a moving subject is cut out of a number of images and combined with a different still shot that forms the background, the size of the subject can be changed to suit the background image. Next, the Dynamic Photo video can easily be converted in-camera into a Motion JPEG movie file. Moreover, moving graphics such as hearts and bouquets of flowers are included so that users can have fun decorating their still images using the Dynamic Photo function. Casio not only allows users to have fun taking and viewing photos, but also provides innovative new ways for them to create original images, right on the camera.

1,000-shot long battery life
Casio has reduced energy consumption by improving the circuitry and operational controls and designing a higher capacity battery, enabling the user to take 1,000 shots on a single full charge. The EX-H10 provides a convenient solution for people on the go. It’s possible to take 100 pictures every day of a 10 day vacation, without ever needing to recharge, eliminating the need to pack a charger. The long-life battery gives users approximately 11 consecutive hours of viewing on a single charge.

New Landscape Mode
The EX-H10 also features a new Landscape Mode for capturing beautiful scenic photography. Unlike earlier landscape photography modes, which enhance the saturation of an entire hue, users can now select between the Vivid Landscape option that uses image analysis to determine and vividly enhance only the most important colors in the landscape or the Mist Removal option that makes weather-affected misty scenes look clear and bright.

The new camera will begin shipping to retail in mid July. The EX-H10 will have an MSRP of $299.99 and will be available in black.

EXILIM Hi-Zoom EX-H10
A powerful zoom, compact digital camera with long battery life, perfect for a vacation.

Beautiful images with 12.1 effective megapixels
This camera’s 12.1 megapixels of high-resolution imagery can render extremely fine detail in the subject. Moreover, the advanced image processing capability provided by the EXILIM Engine 4.0 ensures that color reproduction is clear and bright, and that images have a rich tonal gradation.
Ultra-wide angle 24 mm, 10X optical zoom lens
This lens delivers all the freedom of zoom photography — from an ultra-wide angle 24 mm useful for shooting in a small room or for photographing large subjects, to a 10X optical zoom that brings distant subjects up close. The camera also has a CCD-shift image stabilization mechanism.
Long battery life allows 1,000 shots on a single charge*
The low energy requirements of the circuitry and operational controls, particularly the EXILIM Engine 4.0 coupled with the high capacity battery, make it possible to take 1,000 shots on a single full charge.

Photo modes that make the most of the camera’s high-speed image processing technology
Dynamic Photo function for creating composite moving images
This function allows the user to extract images of a moving subject and combine them with a still image to form a new background. This takes place inside the, without the need for computer editing. This mode allows the user to create a still image containing a moving subject. Casio has now improved its revolutionary Dynamic Photo function in the following ways:

* It is now possible to enlarge or reduce the size of the cut-out subject to suit the still image on which it will be placed
* A Dynamic Photo can be converted into a Motion JPEG movie file right on the camera
* Eight different moving graphics are included so that users can have fun decorating their still images
* Using computer software that comes with the camera, users can transfer still images from a computer to the camera to create a Dynamic Photo
Landscape Mode
The model has a dedicated button, making it easy to capture beautiful landscape photographs. Users can choose between the Vivid Landscape option, which vividly enhances only the most impressive colors, or the Mist Removal option, which produces clearer pictures when the atmosphere is misty.
Makeup Mode
The camera has a single dedicated button that helps create beautiful pictures of people’s faces. This function ensures that faces are correctly focused and well exposed, adjusts the smoothness of skin and softens facial shadows caused by sunlight.
Handheld Night Scene function or Lighting function
The camera can automatically detect difficult situations, such as night scenes where there would normally be camera shake and backlit scenes where faces or backgrounds can be poorly exposed. After detecting problem area, the camera then automatically adjusts to the most appropriate settings. Users only have to press the shutter button to take great pictures.
High Resolution HD Movies
The EX-H10 features an HD Movie function. Just press the dedicated Movie button to take beautiful movies at 1280x720 pixels.

* Photography based on CIPA standards. Calculations based on an ambient temperature of 23°C; LCD monitor on; zooming back and forward from the wide end to the telephoto end every 30 seconds; flash used once every two shots; and the power turned on and off once every ten shots.

How Photos Can Be Protected From Natural Disasters, Advises ScanMyPhotos.com

IRVINE, Calif.--(Business Wire)--Expanding on the theme of National Preparedness Month (NPM), ScanMyPhotos.com is not waiting until the annual September event to issue an urgent recommendation encouraging people to take action and prepare for emergencies year-round. NPM is a nationwide effort sponsored by the Department of Homeland Security's Ready Campaign to increase awareness for preparing and to effectively deal with emergencies and natural disasters.

ScanMyPhotos.com, an associate member of the National Association of Professional Organizers (NAPO), is urging people to have their analog photo snapshots scanned and backed up.

In advance of National Preparedness Month, ScanMyPhotos.com president and CEO, Mitch Goldstone, said, “Beyond gathering survival items when preparing for natural disaster emergencies, such as fires, hurricanes or earthquakes, think about protecting irreplaceable items in the home.”

While insurance may cover replacement of possessions that have monetary value, how are you protecting items of emotional value? Those shoeboxes of family photos tucked away are often overlooked until it is too late.

What is your backup plan?

According to ScanMyPhotos.com, the top six reasons to backup your photo memories are:

1) Offsite storage in case of a natural disaster.

2) Family divorce or relationship separations (duplicate copies solve ownership issues)

3) Halt ongoing fading and discoloration of your older analog pictures.

4) Easy sharing of photo reprints with others.

5) Making treasured photo gifts for anniversaries, birthdays and more.

6) Sharing stories and journaling to give a real ‘face’ for family tree genealogy projects.

“Preparing for a natural disaster is a year-round imperative,” explains Goldstone who said, “In an instant, when disaster strikes, you risk losing precious photo memories. Family photographs document our lives in a way that material items cannot. Once those photos are destroyed, that part of the family history is lost forever. Family photos can also be ‘lost’ due to neglectful storage, sun exposure and actual time. There is an urgency to preserve your analog photos before facing a possible natural disaster emergency.”

The daunting task of individually scanning each picture has been replaced with ultra-fast and affordable bulk photo scanning using Kodak technology and performed by photo imaging industry professionals with same day return. Your photos are digitally scanned and saved onto DVDs allowing you multiple off-site backups.

ScanMyPhotos.com provides secured Extreme Backup to archive all your images. Its menu of hundreds of other photo imaging gift and sharing items are posted on its Web site.

In Tough Economy, New Survey Shows Design Professionals Use More Stock Photography to Cut Costs

Over 40 percent say they are using more stock photos this year compared to last year, according the survey by International Communications Research, sponsored by Shutterstock

New York, June 9, 2009 – In an economic climate where graphic designers are often asked to produce more with fewer resources, a new survey by International Communications Research (ICR) shows that over 40 percent of designers are using more stock photography to lower costs in 2009 compared to last year.

Designers today have responded to the economic downturn in a myriad of ways, according to Ami Brophy, CEO of The Art Directors Club in New York, a top organization for art directors and designers in the U.S.

“Increasingly, designers report taking on more concurrent projects while expanding their organizational and project management skills with greater awareness for the bottom line,” Brophy said.

The ICR survey showed that many designers found using stock photos an effective way to save money in the face of greater economic pressure. Further, when considering stock photo vendors, most looked for the best deal due to tighter budgets.

Shutterstock, the world’s largest subscription-based online stock image agency, ranked highly in many key areas. Approximately 60 percent rated Shutterstock highly for quality and selection of images, and three-fourths said they are likely to use Shutterstock in the future.

“It has always been our goal to provide the best images at the best value,” said Jon Oringer, founder and CEO of Shutterstock. “The advertising and design community can rely on us for their image needs to maintain the high level of design their clients expect.”

Adam Riggs, Shutterstock president and CFO, points out that Shutterstock’s image library continues to grow despite the economic downturn, adding an average of 70,000 images per week.

“Thanks to Shutterstock’s extensive library of over 7 million premium images, our subscribers always know that they’ll be able to find the perfect photo, vector or illustration for their creative projects,” Riggs said.

Key Survey Statistics at a Glance:

* Two in five art directors (40 percent) cite budget decreases compared to a year ago.
* More than one in five art directors and graphic designers (22 percent) are working on more projects for less profit compared to a year ago.
* Two-thirds (67 percent) of graphic designers/art directors are doing more in-house production as a cost-saving measure. Other cost-saving measures include using online royalty-free stock photography agencies (51 percent) and using traditional stock photography agencies (18 percent).
* 21 percent of graphic artists said they plan to use subscription-based agencies as the primary source of their future stock photo needs. Those more likely to use subscription-based agencies include heavier users of images (27 percent) and those who work at companies with 10 or more employees (31 percent).
* When asked what most influences their decision to use online subscription-based royalty-free stock photography, most respondents answered limited budget (80 percent). Other top reasons included:
o To combine elements into a new design (41 percent)
o Using images for an indefinite period of time (40 percent)
o Using images in a combination of communications mediums (37 percent)
* At least nine in ten respondents gave a top rating for quality of images (95 percent) and large selection of images (90 percent) when asked to rate the importance of various attributes in selecting a stock photo company on a seven-point scale.
* Three-fourths of those likely to use subscription-based agencies are likely to use Shutterstock in the future. One-fourth of those surveyed (26 percent) are extremely/very likely and half (51 percent) are somewhat likely to use Shutterstock.

Survey Methodology:
International Communications Research (ICR) surveyed 300 professionals (120 Art Directors and 180 Graphic Designers) by using a targeted web panel of 300 respondents. In order to qualify for the survey, respondents had to be employed either part or full-time in the United States and be at least aware of stock photography. Awareness of stock photography was 93% and the survey ran 10 minutes on average.

Because this is a sample, and not an actual population, an associated margin of error applies. At the 95% confidence level, the margin of error for the total sample of 300 is +/-5.7 percentage points.
